The University of Memphis defeated Louisiana-Lafayette by a final of 63-50 on Monday night at Earl K. Long Gym. The Lady Tigers improve to 2-0, while the Cajuns fall to 0-2
As was the case last season when the teams met, Shannon Hamp was the story once again for Memphis. The 6-2 senior from Monroe, La. dominated in the paint. Hamp recorded a game-high 22 points and grabbed five offensive rebounds, six total.
The Lady Tigers benefited from 25 offensive rebounds. Although the Cajuns shot 41 percent compared to 36 percent by Memphis, the rebounding margin helped Memphis put up 21 more shots than UL Lafayette.
Sharee Glenn led the Cajuns in scoring for the second straight game. Glenn scored 17 points, while Sarah Richey added nine points and four blocks. In her first game of the season, Charlotte Green scored seven points and added a team-high six rebounds.
The Cajuns cut the Lady Tigers lead to 29-28 early in the second half, but a three-point shot by Tamika Butler gave Memphis back a four-point cushion. Another three-pointer by Butler would cap a 10-2 Lady Tigers run giving the visitors a 46-36 edge. From there, Memphis would pull away, up by as many as 18 points, never seeing their lead threatened.
The Memphis press disrupted the Cajuns offense early on. Neither Sarah Richey nor Charlotte Green attempted a field goal in the first seven minutes. Richey's first shot came with 12:58 left in the first half and cut the Lady Tigers lead to 12-8. Green's first attempt came with 9:45 left to play in the half with the Cajuns down 16-10.
The Cajuns trailed 27-22 at the half due mostly to a large disparity in rebounds. Memphis dominated on the glass, collecting 26 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards. The Cajuns managed 16 rebounds, just three offensively.
