Cajuns Fall To LSU

Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun soccer team continued its tough early season schedule Sunday as LSU got two quick goals en route to a 3-0 victory over the visitors at the LSU Soccer Complex.

Ashley Mitnick's 30-yard free kick at the 4:21 mark proved to be enough as the Tigers (2-1) avenged a 3-0 loss to No. 16 Florida Friday. Kara Dean's putback of a deflection at the 25:00 mark to make it 2-0 going into halftime, and Jessica King added a late breakaway goal to provide the final margin.

The Cajuns outshot LSU 14-13, but Tiger goalie Bonnie Otillion had four saves in posting the shutout. Freshman Shelly Simon had five saves but allowed the three tallies in goal for the Cajuns.

The loss handed UL Lafayette (1-3) its second consecutive setback after an upset 1-0 triumph over Jacksonville last Sunday at the Port City Classic.

The Cajuns have certainly had no breaks in the early going, having already narrowly lost tough contests at Southeastern Louisiana 3-1 on Friday and Butler 2-1 in overtime in the season opener.

UL will open up its 2001 home season Wednesday with a 5 p.m. match against Centenary at Moore Park. That match begins a six-game homestand.
