Cajuns Soccer Honored With Academic Award

Saturday, Jan. 2, 2003

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team was recently honored with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award, earned for success in the classroom, for team GPA during the 2001-02 academic year.

The Ragin' Cajuns were one of 67 men's and 214 women's programs to earn the award by achieving a 3.0 GPA or higher as a team during the 2001-02 academic year. Louisiana-Lafayette, under third-year head coach Dave Poggi, earned a team GPA of 3.03.

The awards were presented at the College Coaches Luncheon during the 2003 NSCAA Convention, held Jan. 15-19 in Kansas City, Mo.

“Our goal at the beginning of the season is to have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. Anything less is unacceptable,” said Poggi. “This award is indicative of the type of student-athletes who are in our program.”

The Ragin' Cajuns began off-season workouts this week with Strength and Conditioning Coach Brad Ohrt, as well as individual workouts with the coaching staff. The squad will begin its spring schedule in March.
