Louisiana State Overpowers Cajuns Soccer

Friday, Nov. 1, 2002

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana State University's women's soccer team controlled Friday's match with visiting Louisiana-Lafayette from start to finish as they posted a 2-0 win over their I-10 rivals here at the LSU Soccer Complex.

The Tigers offense and defense were too much for the Ragin' Cajuns (6-8-3) to overcome. Louisiana State outshot the Cajuns 28-2 and peppered goalkeeper Liza Preseault with 18 shots on goal.

Louisiana State (11-4-2) broke through at 34:41 of the first half when Elizabeth Marschall scored her first goal of the season. The goal was setup by Stephanie Keating and Mandy Heintz. Keating took a pass from Heintz and played it to Marschall perfectly for the match-winning goal.

The Tigers capped off the scoring at 57:32 of the match with an unassisted goal from Melissa Shelton. Shelton beat Preseault over the shoulders from 10 yards out. Shelton picked up a deflected pass inside the box and made a Cajuns defender miss allowing her to fire one past Preseault.

UL Lafayette's two shots on goal came from Kristi Burkett and Tiffany Garber.

Preseault's 16 saves were the second-highest single-match total in program history and the most since Anne Corbello collected 15 saves against UL Monroe Sept. 3, 2000. The save tally was a personal best for Preseault. She made 10 saves in the second half alone.

The Cajuns remain winless all-time against Louisiana State and have not scored a goal on the Tigers in three matches, being outscored 9-0. It was the sixth time this season that the Cajuns were shutout.

Louisiana-Lafayette will now begin to prepare for the 2002 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which begins Wednesday, Nov. 6 in Mobile, Ala. on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

The Cajuns are the No. 4 seed and will face fifth-seeded Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The Cajuns defeated the Lady Toppers 2-1 in double-overtime Oct. 25 in Bowling Green, Ky. UL Lafayette will be looking for its first SBC Tournament win in program history.
