WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOSTS NORTH TEXAS IN SBC OPENER

CAJUNS LOOK TO EXTEND WIN STREAK

LAFAYETTE – Since joining the Sun Belt Conference in the 1991-92 season, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team has failed to win a conference opener.

The last time that a Cajuns team won a conference opener was January 18, 1990 when Louisiana-Lafayette defeated I-10 rival New Orleans 80-69 at the Cajundome. The Cajuns were members of the American South Conference then.

Friday night, the Cajuns will seek to snap the SBC opening-game skid when they host the North Texas Lady Eagles in a 7 p.m. tilt at Earl K. Long Gym.

The Cajuns (4-6) will also be looking to extend their current two-game winning streak. Both wins came last week at Long Gym over Wofford and Mercer.

Louisiana-Lafayette will be looking to win its third straight home game as well. The last time that the Cajuns won three straight at home was in 1990. From Jan. 6-22, 1990, the Cajuns took five straight home games. This is the second straight season that the Cajuns have opened up 2-0 at home. Last season they won their first two home games, before falling to Baylor in the attempt for a 3-0 start.

Leading the way for the Cajuns is St. Thomas More High School product and Lafayette native Charlotte Green. Green is the Cajuns' leading scorer with 14.1 points per game and is coming off a career-best 24 points against Mercer last Thursday. She scored 20 of the 24 in the second half and scored six of the Cajuns' 10 points in the overtime session.

Sarah Richey is the leading force for the Cajuns down low. The Carencro native is on pace to set the single-season and career record for blocks in a season. This season she has 37 blocks, 11 away from setting the single-season record held by Tiffany Green who established the standard in the 1997-98 season.

Richey tied a school record with eight blocks in a game against Mercer last Thursday and has 60 blocks for her career at Louisiana-Lafayette. She needs 21 more blocks to become the all-time leader.

UNT (6-4) enters the contest having not played a game in 11 days. The Lady Eagles defeated Central Florida 78-55 on Dec. 17. All four Lady Eagles' losses have come to teams ranked in the Top 25, three of them to teams in the Top 10.

UNT has six seniors back from last season's team that went 19-11 and earned a berth into the Women's NIT. Forward Jalie Mitchell leads UNT with 16 points per game and is an All-American candidate this season.

Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Gay Nix enters the game one win shy of passing Mary Jo Castell for second place for wins in a coaching career at UL Lafayette. Nix currently has 37 wins at Louisiana-Lafayette.

The Cajuns and Lady Eagles will be the first SBC teams to tip-off in league play this season. An hour after the Cajuns and UNT tip-off, Denver and New Mexico State will do the same in Las Cruces, N.M.

Following Friday's game, the Cajuns will host Denver on Sunday in the final game of 2001. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Long Gym.
