Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns played
tough on Thursday, but finished on the short end of a 62-50 decision to the
Memphis Tigers.
The Cajuns fall to 2-6, while
Memphis improves to 5-5.
The Cajuns led early, but once the
lead slipped away, UL Lafayette was never able to recapture the advantage.? Memphis applied the press early and often to
disrupt the Cajuns offense and force several costly turnovers.? Louisiana-Lafayette turned the ball over 24
times, compared to 19 by Memphis.
After a Carrie Fincher three pointer
brought the Cajuns to within 37-36, Memphis went on a 9-2 run to extend their
lead to eight at 46-38.? UL Lafayette
fought back and closed the gap to 49-46 with five minutes left in the contest.? Memphis again responded to the Cajuns run
with five unanswered points.? The Cajuns
were unable to make a final run as Memphis hit late free throws to seal the
win.
“The game was actually closer than
the final score,” said head coach Gay Nix.?
“We had far too many turnovers and allowed too many second chance points.”
The Cajuns were out rebounded
40-36, including 14-9 on the offensive glass.?
Memphis had 19 second chance points, compared to just eight by the
Cajuns.
Shannon Hamp was the story for
Memphis.? The 6-2 junior from Monroe,
La. dominated in the paint.? She
recorded 27 points, all of which coming from no farther than three feet from
the basket.? Sarah Richey had early
success defending Hamp, but ran into foul trouble early and was forced to take
a more conservative defensive approach.
Richey led the Cajuns with 14
points.? Charlotte Green grabbed a team
high 10 rebounds, while chipping in nine points.? Breanna Evans had 12 points, before fouling out.
The Cajuns started the first half
like a house of fire on defense, but several turnovers cost them from being up
by more than a 6-0 margin five minutes into the contest.? Memphis would tie the game at twelve midway
through the half, only to see another 6-0 Cajuns run.? Louisiana-Lafayette's lead would last only 3:18 with the Tigers
taking their first lead at 23-22.? From
there, Memphis outscored the Cajuns 8-2 to close the half up 31-24.
Louisiana-Lafayette will play their
first home game of the season on Sunday at the Earl K. Long Gym at 1pm.? The Cajuns will look to avenge a 74-71
setback to Wofford College in the season opener.
