Cajuns Fall at South Carolina

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team put forth a great effort Sunday afternoon, but fell short losing 72-61 at South Carolina.? UL Lafayette drops to 0-2, while South Carolina improves to 2-0.

The Cajuns could just not match the size and physical strength of the Gamecocks.? South Carolina recorded 22 points in the paint to only six by the Cajuns.? The Gamecocks dominated the boards, out rebounding the Cajuns 58-33.

“I'm very proud of the effort we had,” said Cajuns head coach Gay Nix.? “I saw a big improvement in our defensive effort; we did a good job contesting their shots.? They are a very big and physical team that beat us on the boards.”

UL Lafayette's effort was outstanding against a strong SEC team.? The Cajuns held South Carolina to just 36 percent shooting and outscored the Gamecocks 40-37 in the second half.

“We battled all game.? There are a lot of positives from this game that we can build on.? Good things will happen to this team if we play like this all season.”

Sarah Richey had an outstanding day for UL Lafayette recording 21 points on 10-20 shooting, 14 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and three blocks.? Charlotte Green was solid notching 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.

South Carolina was led by Jocelyn Penn's 18 points and Ines Ajanovic's 17 points.? Tatyana Troina chipped in five points and 10 rebounds, eight of which were offensive.

Next up for the Cajuns is the Southwest Texas Classic.? The Cajuns will meet High Point on Friday at 6pm and Southwest Texas State on Saturday at 8pm.
