CAJUN WOMEN FINISH FOURTH IN POPEYES INVITATIONAL...Sept. 23, 2000
LAFAYETTE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun women's cross country team earned a
third-place finish in the Ragin' Cajun "Popeyes" Invitational three-mile
competition held at Acadiana Park on Saturday.
The Cajun men's team finished fourth overall in the team standings with 111
points.
"This is the best finish Louisiana-Lafayette has ever had at our home
meet," said women's coach
Robin Judice. "They're learning the power of
competing as a team."
Jeanne Menard led the women's team for the first time this season,
finishing in eighth place with a time of 18:58.45.
Analise Zaunbrecher
finished twelfth with a time of 19:32.81, followed closely by
Dodi Oubre
(19:42.83, 13th).
"
Jeanne Menard was only 10 seconds off her personal best on this course,"
said Judice. "Dodi was running with a sprained ankle and showed a lot of
guts to finish 12th."
Other runners for the Cajuns were
Natalie Gillis (20:07.09, 19th),
Laura Zaunbrecher (21:12.27, 34th),
Kelly Brown (21:28.53), Yoshi Taylor
(21:57.75) and
Brittany Olivier (21:58.78).
"
Natalie Gillis is back healthy and really stepped up today to close the
gap between our first and fifth runners," said Judice.
LSU won the competition with a team score of 72 points. New Orleans'
Micheal Mannova won the individual competition with a time of 17:03.75.
On the men's side,
Nick Bouterie placed 10th in the men's four-mile run
with a time of 22:26.88. Bouterie has been a solid runner for the Cajuns,
finishing in the top 20 twice in the first two meets of the season.
Other runners for the Cajuns were
Walter Whitfield (23:21.79, 19th),
Benji Terracina (23:42.34, 25th),
Nick Meaux (23:47.02, 27th),
Chad Campbell
(23:55.44, 30th) and
Ben Fisher (25:06.69,46th).
Tulane finished with 40 points in the team standings. Tulane's Peter
Rotich led all runners with a time of 20:51.09.
Both Cajun men's and women's cross country teams will compete Saturday in
the annual LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge.
