CAJUN RUNNERS SIXTH, SEVENTH IN LSU INVITATIONAL .... Oct. 10,
1998
BATON ROUGE -- USL's Ragin' Cajun men's cross country team took a
sixth-place team finish and the Lady Cajun women's squad finished seventh
in 11-team fields here Saturday in the LSU Invitational Meet.
The Cajun squad had freshman team members turn in the top individual
performances for both units, with John Stelly the top Cajun finisher in
23rd place in the men's race and Tiffany Guinn finishing 22nd in the
women's race as the top Lady Cajun finisher.
Overall, the Cajun men had 195 points to finish well behind Tulane's
winning 35-point total, while McNeese State was second with 59, host LSU
third with 64, Southern Mississippi fifth at 112 and Louisiana Tech sixth
at 127. Trailing the Cajuns were Loyola with 197, Meridian Community
College with 198, Southeastern Louisiana with 209 and New Orleans with 237.
Xavier did not finish enough runners to qualify for team honors.
The Lady Cajuns finished with 172 points in finishing seventh, well
back
of Rice University's winning 46-point total, McNeese was also second in the
women's race with 70 points, followed by LSU with 91, Southeastern La. with
95, Tulane with 96 and Southern Mississippi with 139. Behind the Lady
Cajuns were New Orleans at 199 and Loyola at 215, with Xavier and La. Tech
not finishing enough runners to score team points.
Stelly posted a 26:44 clocking over an 8,000-meter course to lead the
Cajun squad, and the Cajun squads had three other finishers in the top 50
with Mark Falgout in 40th place in 27:52, Dominick Boutte in 41st at 27:58
and Ben Fisher in 42nd at 28:02.
Amos Kipyegon of Tulane took the individual title with a sterling 24:06
time, 34 seconds ahead of runner-up Yousri El Mejdoubi of USM.
Guinn turned in a 19:13 time over the 5,000-meter women's course to
lead
the USL women, with Jamie Melancon also finishing 27th in 19:50 as the
other Lady Cajun to break 20 minutes. Dodi Oubre was 34th in 20:49 and
Jessica Kachian was 37th in 20:58 as the other USL runners in the top 40.
Hanne Lyngstad of Tulane finished with a 17:27 time to finish six
seconds
ahead of runner-up Sarah Salmon of McNeese at 17:33 and Sita Waru of
McNeese at 17:40.
The next outing for the Cajun squads will be next Saturday when USL
takes
part in the Louisiana Championships in Lake Charles.
