Daniel Freeman enters his fifth season with the Ragin’ Cajuns baseball program as a volunteer assistant coach. Freeman works with the pitching staff and helps with recruiting.

Freeman has coached two of Louisiana’s elite pitchers in 2017 Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year and Gold Spikes Semifinalist Gunner Leger and 2018 Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year Colten Schmidt.

Freeman has helped the Cajuns pitching staff post three of the four lowest ERA’s in program history since head coach Tony Robichaux took the helm in 1995. The team notched a 3.25 ERA in 2016, the lowest since 1989 after registering a 3.37 ERA the year before. The Ragin' Cajuns also notched a 3.33 ERA in 2017.

In 2016, Louisiana led the Sun Belt in ERA, wins, strikeouts, saves. The team finished second in the league in opponents average, innings pitched, and walks allowed.

In his first season with the Cajuns, the squad led the Sun Belt in wins and saves despite having to lean on an all-true freshman weekend rotation and closer. The Ragin’ Cajuns also allowed the third fewest walks per nine innings in program history.

Over the last three years, Freeman has coached nine pitchers that have moved on to play professional baseball.

Freeman spent five years in professional baseball from 2002-07 including four seasons in the Astros farm system, playing his last two seasons with the Salem Avalanche in High-A. While playing pro ball, Freeman was named to an all-star team twice and led the Appalachian League in wins in 2002.

During the 2003 season, he led the South Atlantic League with 21 saves, breaking both the team and league record in that category.

Freeman also played with the Shreveport Sports of the Independent League in 2007.

The Houston Astros drafted Freeman in the 17th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft out of Texarkana College. Freeman spent two seasons at Texarkana College, where as a sophomore he compiled a 14-2 record, breaking the single-season wins record, en route to earning All-American honors.

Prior to enrolling at Texarkana College, Freeman was named to the Class 5A All-State team and was the District 2-5A MVP in 2000 at Ruston High School.
