Five Cajuns finish in top-10 in women's 5K; Maynard leads men to third-place finish
LAKE CHARLES – Isabelle Russell led five Louisiana runners into the Top 10 as Louisiana captured the women's cross country team title at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede, while Matthew Maynard's fourth-place finish paced the men to third.
Louisiana totaled 26 points in the women's 5K race, finishing comfortably ahead of Incarnate Word's 44 to repeat as champions of the event. McNeese placed third with 63 points, followed by Northwestern State (121) and Southern (141).
Russell finished second overall after traversing the course at the Enos Derbonne Sports Complex in 16 minutes, 43.87 seconds, trailing only McNeese's Uxue Castro-Martin, who won in 16:34.95.
The Cajuns strengthened their winning effort with three consecutive finishers following Russell. Angelle Dupuis placed fourth in 17:13.32, Ella Segura took fifth in 17:16.29 and Brooke Berger finished sixth in 17:21.44. Chloé Crowell completed Louisiana's scoring group in ninth at 17:40.77.
Elizabeth Stamey added a 13th-place finish for Louisiana in 18:06.65, while Cate Williamson placed 17th in 18:26.82.
Maynard covered the men's 4-mile course in 19:06.77 to lead Louisiana, which finished with 77 points. McNeese claimed the team championship with 30 points, edging Incarnate Word's 34.
Peyton Bourgeois was Louisiana's second finisher, placing 19th in 20:02.42. Jackson Jarrett followed in 23rd at 20:13.95, while Taylor Roller finished 30th in 20:59.70 and Reed Boudreaux took 32nd in 21:30.42 to complete the scoring lineup. Joshua Quintana placed 34th for the Ragin' Cajuns in 21:56.56 and Mason Hailey finished 38th in 22:30.99.
Louisiana has a two-week break to prepare for the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M in Bryan-College Station, Texas on Friday, Oct. 16. It'll be the squad's final meet ahead of the Oct. 30 SBC Championships in Foley, Alabama.
