Louisiana Comes Up Short in Five-Set Thriller with UTA

Krause and Schnell join Ervin in double figures, Cajuns post 13 blocks and narrowly miss victory
LAFAYETTE – Marlee Ervin delivered a match-high 17 kills and Louisiana recorded 13 blocks, but UT Arlington recovered after an untimely injury to its starting setter to slip past the Ragin' Cajuns for a five-set victory Friday at E.K. Long Gym.
Louisiana reversed the match lead by claiming the second and third sets before the Mavericks fought back for a 25-21, 22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12 decision. The Ragin' Cajuns fell to 4-8, while UT Arlington improved to 6-5.
Momentum shifted in UL's favor late in Set 2 when UTA lost the services of setter Lucy Tricco while holding a 20-17 lead. With the Mavericks reeling, the Ragin' Cajuns dialed up the pressure on the frontline with three blocks over a span of four rallies during a set-ending 8-1 run that erased a 21-17 deficit and evened the match.
The block remained a dominant force for Louisiana early in Set 3, the squad posting three blocks over the first 10 rallies in building a 7-3 lead and never looked back in opening a 2-1 match advantage.
The Mavericks would adjust and figured out a workaround, limiting UL to one block the rest of the way. The result was UTA rallying from a 19-13 deficit to force the winner-take-all frame and the visitors never facing a deficit in the fifth set.
Ervin paced three Louisiana players in double figures, with Harley Krause adding 15 kills and Sarah Schnell contributing 14 on a .280 hitting percentage. The Ragin' Cajuns held advantages in kills (56-53), digs (57-55) and blocks (13-9), finishing with a .154 hitting percentage while limiting UTA to .128.
Emily Williams and Schnell shared Louisiana's blocking lead with seven apiece. Kennedy Gustafson collected 15 digs, Sophia Armstrong added 11, and Rhyan Miciotto and Ryleigh Garis distributed 30 and 20 assists, respectively.
Emilee Sikora and Evyn Snook led UTA with 13 kills each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UL overcame an early five-point deficit to draw even at 15 and 17 in the opening set, but three consecutive kills from Evyn Snook helped the Mavericks regain control.
The Ragin' Cajuns answered with their late surge in the second. Williams participated in three blocks during a five-point run that pushed Louisiana ahead 22-21. Krause supplied two kills over the final three rallies, including the set winner.
Louisiana carried that momentum into the third, opening with three consecutive points and never trailing. The Ragin' Cajuns then appeared poised to finish the match after moving ahead 18-11 in the fourth. UTA rallied, however, and scored the final two points after Schnell's kill tied the set at 23.
UL erased an 8-5 deficit in the deciding set, but the Mavericks responded with five straight points. The Ragin' Cajuns pulled within 13-11 before UTA closed out the match.

Louisiana meets Jackson State in the closing match of the Ragin' Cajuns Classic at E.K. Long Gym at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19. It's the final non-conference match of the season for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Following Saturday's action, UL begins Sun Belt Conference play in Troy, Alabama from Friday-Saturday, September 25-26 with a two-match series against the Troy Trojans.
