Sweeney provides late offensive spark; Lambert leads Louisiana with 16 kills
LAFAYETTE – Grace Sweeney delivered an offensive spark late in the third set and carried that momentum into the fourth, helping the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team chase away Jackson State 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15) on Saturday at E.K. Long Gym in the finale of the Ragin' Cajuns Classic.
Sweeney finished with eight kills on a .438 hitting percentage (8 K, 1 E, 16 TA), providing the Ragin' Cajuns (5-8) with a timely boost off the bench. After returning to the floor with Louisiana ahead 19-18 in the third set, she broke a 20-all tie with three consecutive kills that put the Ragin' Cajuns in control.
She followed with five kills in the fourth set, fueling an offense that produced 17 kills and hit .419 in the match-clinching frame.
UL finished with a 57-45 advantage in kills, outdug the Tigers 66-56 and totaled 10 blocks. The Ragin' Cajuns hit .221 overall while limiting Jackson State (4-9) to a .155 mark, adding six service aces to the Tigers' one.
Lolo Lambert paced Louisiana with 16 kills and added 14 digs for a double-double. Sweeney ranked second on the team in kills, followed by Lindsey Henry, who supplied seven without an error on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage.
Emily Williams contributed six kills without an error, hit .545 and led the Cajuns with six blocks. Harley Krause and Sarah Schnell also recorded six kills apiece.
Rhyan Miciotto recorded 22 assists and a team-high 15 digs, while Ryleigh Garis added 20 assists and 10 digs. Kennedy Gustafson contributed 12 assists and 12 digs while surpassing the 1,000-career digs mark in her collegiate career.
Hope Briggs led Jackson State with 13 kills, while Shelby Zanders added 10 without an error.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana separated from a 16-all tie in the opening set with four consecutive points, capped by a block from Henry and Schnell. Krause's ace helped extend the margin to 23-18 before Lambert delivered the finishing kill.
The Cajuns led 19-15 in the second set, but Jackson State rallied and scored seven of the final nine points after trailing 21-18 to even the match.
Louisiana built a 16-9 advantage in the third before the Tigers pulled even at 17. Sweeney's late three-kill burst supplied the separation the Cajuns needed to reclaim the match lead.
In the fourth, Louisiana broke open an 8-7 contest with eight unanswered points riding the serve of Gustafson. Sweeney supplied three kills during that stretch, and Henry eventually sealed the victory with her final kill.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns travel to Troy, Alabama to start Sun Belt Conference play with a two-match series against the Troy Trojans from Friday-Saturday, September 25-26.
UL and Troy are scheduled to open the two-match series inside Trojan Arena at 6:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 25) then conclude play on Saturday (Sept. 26) in a 2:00 p.m. contest. Both matches are being broadcast on ESPN+
The following week, Louisiana hosts Arkansas State in the SBC home opener from Thursday-Friday, October 1-2 at E.K. Long Gym.
