Louisiana answers twice and outhits the Cavaliers 11–4 in tightly contested midweek matchup
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team showed plenty of fight on the road as its Spring Break trip through the state of Virginia began on Wednesday night, pressuring No. 21 Virginia with an 11-hit effort before ultimately falling just short, 5–4, at Palmer Park in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Louisiana (22–18) rallied from an early deficit and twice pulled even with the nationally ranked Cavaliers, but Virginia (32–6) used a two-run home run in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to escape with the narrow midweek victory.
Wednesday's contest marked the Ragin' Cajuns first visit to Charlottesville in program history. It was also the first matchup between the two programs since a March 2011 meeting in Kissimmee, Florida.
The Ragin' Cajuns, who were coming off consecutive wins over Troy on Easter Weekend, saw their win streak snapped. The result also broke UL's two-game win streak in midweek games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia struck first in the opening inning, taking a 2–0 lead on Reagan Hickey's two-run single. Bethaney Noble rebounded quickly, facing only one over the minimum through the third inning.
Louisiana answered in the fourth when Cecilia Vasquez delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to right-center that scored Brooke Otto and Mia Norwood to tie the game at 2–2.
The Ragin' Cajuns threatened to pull ahead in the fifth inning, loading the bases with one out but UVA relief pitcher Eden Bigham managed to escape the threat. The Cavaliers brought the momentum over to the bottom of the fifth, breaking through after Jade Hylton launched a two-run home run to right-center field.
UL again responded in the sixth. Dayzja Williams sparked the rally with a triple to right field and Mia Liscano followed with an RBI single to trim the deficit. Moments later, Liscano crossed the plate on a wild pitch to even the score at 4–4.
Virginia, however, scratched across the deciding run in the bottom half of the inning when Hickey lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home Kelsey Hackett for the 5–4 edge
Louisiana put the tying run in scoring position in the seventh after Norwood reached with her fourth hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Bigham closed the door to secure the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Ragin' Cajuns' offense produced steady pressure throughout the evening, collecting 11 hits and placing runners on base in six of the seven innings.
Norwood led the charge with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, setting her career-high for base hits and matching Haley Hart's total vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Feb. 15 for most by a Cajun this season.
Williams added two hits including a triple and Liscano chipped in a pair of hits and an RBI, while Vasquez posted her fourth multiple-RBI game of the season and 19th of her collegiate career.
Noble (4.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K) started in the circle for the Cajuns and worked four innings before Julianne Tipton (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K) handled the final two frames.
Despite the setback, Louisiana outperformed Virginia at the plate, outhitting the hosts 11-4. The Ragin' Cajuns recorded the second-most hits UVA allowed in non-conference play this spring (14 vs. Arkansas).
