Schmitt posts low round for Louisiana; final round of stroke play set for Wednesday
MADISON, Miss. – UL's golf team found the going tough for a second straight day Tuesday at the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championships, slipping back one spot to 11th place after two trips around the Annandale Golf Club.
The Cajuns improved by three strokes from Monday's opening 10-over-par 298 score, but the Tuesday 295 total still has them barely clinging to hope to make Thursday's match play competition. Their 17-over 593 total is 26 strokes behind front-running and defending champion Coastal Carolina, and more importantly UL is 21 strokes behind number four ranking Southern Miss.
The top four teams after Wednesday's final trip around the 7,143-yard par-72 Annandale layout will advance to match play on Thursday, with semifinals and finals that day to determine the conference champion and the Sun Belt's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
"What I'm watching isn't bad golf," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman, whose team won the title in 2023 in the first of what is now four straight years for Annandale to host the league meet. "It's a fine line a lot of times between good shots and bad shots and we've been on that line now for two days. We need to go out and have a magic one tomorrow."
Junior Carter Schmitt of Baton Rouge had UL's low round on Tuesday at even-par 72 with three birdies but a tough four-hole stretch in the first nine holes that included three bogeys. His 76-72—148 (+4) score has him tied for 33rd in the individual rankings.
Freshman James Holtsclaw of Shreveport, who was tied for 10th after Monday's opening one-under 71, had a 78 Tuesday and is at five-over 149 and is tied for 38th. Senior Malan Potgieter, the nation's 37th-ranked player entering the Sun Belt tournament and UL's top finisher in all 10 events this season, had a second straight 75 and is at six-over 150, tied for 43rd. The Kirkwood, South Africa, native has not finished below 12th individually in a tournament this season and is tied for the national lead in top-three finishes (six).
Freshman Drew Sliman of Lafayette had the Cajuns' second-lowest round of the day at one-over 73 and is at seven-over 151 for the tournament, as is senior Jean Louis du Plessis of Graff-Reinet, South Africa after a three-over 75.
"These guys did fight," coach Sliman said. "I'm not sure where we were at the halfway point, after 27 holes, but I know we were five or six shots worse than we are now. Jean Louis and Drew both played their last five holes in three-under, so that tells me there's no quit in them. I know they're going to go out and they really want to shoot a good round for themselves."
Coastal Carolina stands at nine-under 567 through two rounds, good enough for a three-shot lead over James Madison which had the low round of the day at eight-under 280. The Dukes are at 570, Arkansas State is third at 571 and Southern Miss fourth at 572 in a tightly bunched group looking to grab one of the top four spots and advance to Thursday. South Alabama is fifth at 577 and Troy sixth at 581 and looking to move up into the top four.
Max Bengtsson of Coastal had the day's low round with a six-under 66 and is the individual leader at eight-under 136, one shot ahead of Arkansas State's Jake Wallis (68-69—137) and two shots ahead of ULM's Louis Anceaux (71-67—138. Two-time individual champion Hugo Thyr of South Alabama is fourth, one more shot back at five-under 139.
The final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday with the Cajuns going out in the second wave off the No. 10 tee at 9:15 a.m. Live scoring is available online at scoreboard.clippd.com and ESPN+ will have live coverage beginning at 10 a.m.
