Louisiana to wrap up regular season on Friday at Arkansas State

TROY, Ala. – Jerrel Bellamy scored a career-high 25 points to lead four players in double figures as Troy pulled away in the second half for a 78-59 victory over Louisiana on Tuesday night at Trojan Arena before a crowd of 3,035.

Thomas Dowd added 18 points for Troy (19-11, 11-6 SBC), which also received 12 points apiece from Victor Valdez and Cooper Campbell. Louisiana (10-20, 7-10 SBC) played without leading scorer Dorian Finister and was paced by Jaxon Olvera with 19 points and Karris Bilal with 12.

Louisiana opened on an 11-2 run, holding Troy without a field goal for the first 8:17. After two free throws by Valdez, Todd Jones Jr. sparked a 9-0 spurt for the Ragin' Cajuns. Olvera scored five straight points, and Jeremiah Evans added a layup to give Louisiana its largest lead.

Bellamy answered with a basket to ignite a 10-0 Troy run. Louisiana managed only two free throws from Michael Collins during a 10:16 field-goal drought before Olvera's 3-pointer at the 3-minute mark snapped a 17-2 surge that put Troy ahead 23-15. Milan Mejia hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the half to trim the deficit to 27-23 at the break.

Both teams shot 33% from the field in the first half and made three 3-pointers. Each collected seven offensive rebounds, but Louisiana did not allow a second-chance point before intermission.

Olvera opened the second half with a jumper to cut the deficit to two. Cooper and Cobi Campbell combined for five straight points, and Bellamy added a layup and a dunk to cap a 9-0 run that pushed the lead to 36-25. Louisiana did not threaten the rest of the way.

Troy shot 65.4% (17 of 26) in the second half and capitalized at the free-throw line, outscoring Louisiana 13-4 after halftime. The Trojans finished with a 34-23 advantage at the stripe, with Dowd making eight free throws. Olvera led Louisiana with five rebounds, and Kyren Ratliff added four.

Collins played a career-high 26 minutes, matching his career best with five points and setting a personal high with six assists. Cooper Campbell dished out eight assists as Troy recorded 19 assists on 25 made field goals.

Louisiana closes the regular season Friday at First National Bank Arena against Arkansas State. The Red Wolves won the previous meeting, 79-62, last Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
