Haley Hart’s inside the park grand slam headlines two-out production on Day 1 of Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team returned to the win column on Friday, February 13 by closing out Day 1 of the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational with a 5-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to bounce back from defeat in a tight battle with No. 21 Ole Miss.
An inside the park grand slam delivered by freshman Haley Hart allowed the Ragin' Cajuns (4-2) to break away from a 1-0 contest with A&MCC (1-6) in the fifth inning.
Lexie Delbrey (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 10 K) was in command from start to finish holding the Islanders scoreless until a sac fly in the seventh inning.
Clutch hitting lifted UL over A&MCC as all five runs came with two outs, Kennedy Marceaux opening the scoring with a two-out RBI double in the third and Hart's heroics capping off a two-out rally that started with a walk issued to fellow freshman Natalie Johnson.
Louisiana snapped a two-game losing skid with and rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Ole Miss to start the day.
Sage Hoover (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3K) settled in after the Rebels got a solo home run two batters in, holding the visitors scoreless until the fourth inning.
UL jumped in front in the bottom of the third after a Mia Liscano leadoff walk led to traffic on the base path and set up Hart for an RBI single and Lily Knox delivered one as well for a 2-1 lead.
The Rebels (6-3) took advantage of an extended inning in the fourth to take the momentum back. Persy Llamas broke a 2-all tie with a two-run single to left center finishing off Ole Miss' three-run, two-out rally.
Hoover kept the Cajuns at arm's length yielding only a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning the rest of the way. Ole Miss starting pitcher Kyra Aycock fended off a possible rally by Louisiana in the bottom of the seventh by working around Cecilia Vasquez's leadoff single by recording three consecutive outs.
