WBB Kahlen Norris vs. App State 01.23.26

Louisiana Turned Away by App State’s Second Half Defensive Stand

1/23/2026 11:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Mountaineers use pair of double-digit scoring runs to break free from the Ragin’ Cajuns

LAFAYETTE – A quick spurt of offense in the final seconds of the third quarter brought the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team back within single digits but App State's defense immediately struck down the rally from the onset of the fourth quarter and went on to post a 68-48 win on Friday, January 23 at the Cajundome.

In the final four seconds of the third quarter, Mikaylah Manley hit a layup and Kahlen Norris stole the inbounds pass and converted a three-point play to drop the Ragin' Cajuns deficit to 51-42.

App State (9-10, 2-7 SBC) turned to its SBC-leading and Top 55 nationally ranked scoring defense in the fourth quarter to prevent the Ragin' Cajuns (2-18, 1-9 SBC) from pulling off a repeat rally similar to the first half when UL erased a 20-12 deficit in the second quarter and pulled ahead 24-22.

The Mountaineers held the Ragin' Cajuns off the scoreboard for over 7-1/2 minutes in the fourth quarter, coming 2:17 away from pitching a shutout.

While the defense did its work, App State reeled off a 13-0 run to expand its advantage to 64-42 by the 3:25 mark, putting the game out of reach and denying Louisiana the opportunity to post a second consecutive victory.

Norris was the catalyst for the Ragin' Cajuns in the first half using her three-point shot to trigger the rally in the second quarter that reclaimed the lead.  The first two of the three triples that Norris made in the second quarter set in motion a 12-2 run by Louisiana which provided the 24-22 lead and prompted an App State timeout at 6:12.

The Mountaineers responded with an 8-2 run to pull ahead 30-26 but Norris dialed up another triple at 1:01 brining the Ragin' Cajuns back within one possession at the halftime break.

Both side swapped baskets in the first three minutes of the third quarter closing with Marina Artero's paint jumper at 7:25 that trimmed the App State lead to 36-33.

App State forced a turnover that led to an Emma Smith three-pointer which broke the trend of trading points, increasing the lead to 41-33. The Mountaineers defense then made the first of two game-defining defensive stands, keeping the Ragin' Cajuns off the board until two Bianca Silva free throws at 3:44 by which time the advantage had been stretched to 48-33.

The Ragin' Cajuns found the offensive spark as the third quarter was expiring but App State's defense forced seven consecutive missed field goals and four turnovers during the fourth quarter breakaway.

App State extended its series win streak to four games and took an 8-7 lead in the all-time series. The Mountaineers also prevented the Ragin' Cajuns from jumping ahead of them in the SBC standings.

Friday's contest marked the 1,500th game in the history of the Louisiana Women's Basketball program.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Norris produced a season-high 15 points on the heels of landing 14 points on Wednesday vs. Coastal Carolina. She shot 5-of-9 from the floor including a stellar 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Manley notched her 13th double-figure scoring output with 11 points, Bianca Silva added eight points and Artero and Lily Ba provided six points each.

Silva was active in the areas of assists (4) and steals (3). It was the 14th time in the past 16 games she's dished out multiple assists.

Louisiana recorded 10 steals as five others joined Silva in collecting a swipe including Artero and Manley with two steals apiece.

App State held a 28-18 edge in points in the paint with, Addie Biel setting the tone by scoring 12 paint points in the first half alone on 6-of-7 shooting, and held a commanding 38-18 advantage in rebounds. The Mountaineers collected 31 defensive rebounds and limited the Ragin' Cajuns to four offensive rebounds.

The Mountaineers depth paid dividends, outscoring Louisiana 23-6 in bench points. Amijah Price, who is usually the Ragin' Cajuns spark off the bench, was held scoreless by the App State defense.
