Offense Leads Cajuns to Finish SFA Tournament with Another Win

Louisiana hits .300-plus again, with Cailin Demps front-and-center, in taking down Abilene Christian
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the second straight day the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team's offense and opposite hitter Cailin Demps stole the show and the result was a 3-1 win (25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15) over Abilene Christian on Saturday, September 6 in the team's final match at the SFA Tournament in Shelton Gym.
One day removed from recording a season-best .381 hitting percentage, Louisiana (5-1) hit above the .300 mark yet again registering 50 kills against the ACU defense at .315 clip. The Ragin' Cajuns hit well north above .500 in the opening set (.609) to claim the lead and closed strong in the fourth set (.579).
Demps fired off 18 more kills merely 12 hours after scorching Sam Houston for 21 kills on Friday night. She finished the three-day event in Nacogdoches with 49 kills (4.1/set), hitting .340 over her 100 swings taken.
UL wasted little time taking control against ACU (2-5), scoring five kills off its first six swings of the match to capture a 10-6 lead in Set 1. The Ragin' Cajuns led wire-to-wire in the opening stanza, gradually pulling away starting with back-to-back kills from Chelsea Gilmore that increased the lead to 16-12.
Both sides found their footing on defense in Set 2 and it lent to 11 ties and six lead changes. Louisiana used its block late, with back-to-back stuffs involving Lindsey Henry, getting the final two of five in the frame to forge ahead for good at 22-20.
The Wildcats offense erupted for 18 kills in Set 3 to avoid the straight sets sweep. ACU came alive after falling behind 15-10, scoring nine kills, with Aubree Beaver landing the last four, during a set-ending 15-4 run.
Louisiana mixed it up in Set 4 setting up the outside hitters more early on getting four including three from Harley Krause during a 5-2 run that led to an 8-6 lead. The advantage was preserved moments later when a pair of kills by Demps and a Kennedy Gustafson ace resulted in the lead growing to 16-10.
The Wildcats got not no closer the rest of the way as the Cajuns went back to Krause and Grace Sweeney on the outside for a combined three more kills while stretching the lead to 22-13.
Not to be outdone, the defense finished with seven blocks in the match-clinching set victory with Henry getting a hand in on the back-to-back stuffs that took Louisiana to the 25-point mark.
The Ragin' Cajuns remained unbeaten all-time in now three matchups with Abilene Christian. Louisiana finished 2-1 at the SFA Tournament, closing with back-to-back wins.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Demps started fast once again, scoring six kills off eight swings taken in Set 1 and accumulating 13 kills through two sets of play.
Four other Cajuns scored at least five kills led by Sweeney and Krause who registered eight and seven, respectively, to combine for 15 scores from the outside hitter's slot.
Henry took match-high honors with nine blocks (1 BS, 8 BA) to pace UL's efforts in collecting a season-best 15 team blocks. Demps added six blocks (1 BS, 5 BA) to her offensive production.
Ryleigh Garis handed out 28 of the Ragin' Cajuns' 46 assists. She was responsible for 17 of the team's first 25 assists, passing out eight helpers in the narrow Set 2 win that opened a 2-0 match lead.
It was group effort rounding up digs with Sweeney's nine digs leading the way amongst a group of five Cajuns with at least four digs.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns close out their current five-match road trip traveling to the state of Mississippi with stops in Lorman (at Alcorn) and Oxford (at Ole Miss) from Thursday-Friday, September 11-12.
Both matches begin at 6:00 p.m. Louisiana visits Alcorn on Thursday (Sept. 11) then takes on Ole Miss on Friday (Sept. 12). The contest with the Rebels airs on SEC Network Plus (SECN+).
The Ragin' Cajuns then return home to E.K. Long Gym for the Ragin' Cajuns Classic with matches against Southern and Nicholls set for September 19-20.
