Louisiana's Potgieter Qualifies For 125th U.S. Amateur Championship

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golfer Malan Potgieter earned a spot in the field of 312 players set to compete in the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship, scheduled for Aug. 11-17 at the historic Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Potgieter, a senior-to-be from Kirkwood, South Africa, qualified for the event after carding a strong performance Monday at Rockwall Golf Club in suburban Dallas.

The first-team All-Sun Belt Conference and PING All-Region selection posted a 70.78 scoring average for Louisiana during the 2024–25 season, finishing at par or better in 25 of 36 rounds played. He notched 10 rounds in the 60s for the Ragin' Cajuns and earned six top-5 finishes, highlighted by a victory at the Louisiana Classics in March.

The U.S. Amateur will open with two rounds of stroke play Aug. 11-12, with competitors playing one round each on the Olympic Club's Lake and Ocean courses. The top 64 scorers will advance to match play beginning Aug. 13, with coverage available on Peacock and the Golf Channel.

Match play continues through Sunday, Aug. 17, with the championship decided in a 36-hole final. The winner and runner-up will earn exemptions into the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
