Cajuns Fall To Marshall In SBC Tournament Slugfest, 17-13

Higgs gets five hits in final game in Louisiana uniform
Marshall (33-25) advanced to face top-seeded Coastal Carolina on Saturday, needing two wins over the Chanticleers to reach its first SBC Championship Game. Louisiana ended its season with a 27-31 record.
Louisiana scored three runs in the top of the first inning off Marshall starter Clint Moak (3-2), beginning with Yuhasz's RBI single that drove in Drew Markle. Yuhasz, who finished 4-for-6 at the plate, would score from third on a double steal before Lee Amedee laced an RBI double to left to drive in Higgs, who finished 5-for-6 at the plate in his final game in a Ragin' Cajuns uniform.
Maika Niu belted the first of three home runs for Marshall in the bottom of the first before the Thundering Herd scored five unearned runs in the second to take a 6-3 lead. Eddie Leon's grand slam fueled the inning as Marshall recorded four homers in the game.
Marshall scored four times in the third and led 11-3 after four innings before Louisiana mounted the first of two comebacks.
Yuhasz belted a two-run homer to left off Moak in the fifth inning, and Connor Cuff drove in two runs with a double to cut the deficit to 11-7 before the Thundering Herd scored five runs in the sixth to lead, 16-7.
Amedee drew a bases-loaded walk to start a four-run rally in the seventh while Cuff and Markle added two-out RBI singles after Higgs scored on a double-play grounder.
Yuhasz led off the eighth with a single and moved to third on Higgs' double as Louisiana threatened in the eighth before Caleb Stelly reached on an error, allowing Yuhasz to score. Higgs later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 16-13, but after Owen Galt drew a walk to load the bases, Marshall reliever Nicholas Weyrich induced a pair of choppers back to the mound to halt the rally.
Niu went 4-for-6 with six RBI for Marshall, which collected 16 hits and won for the ninth time in the last 10 games. Moak earned the win after striking out six batters and allowing five earned runs in 5.0 innings. Weyrich, the fifth pitcher used by the Thundering Herd, pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his seventh save.
Andrew Herrmann (3-5) suffered the loss for Louisiana after scattering five hits and allowing four runs (three unearned) in 1.1 innings. Cuff went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and three RBI for the Ragin' Cajuns while Markle was 2-for-6 with an RBI.
