SB Maddie Hayden Makes Catch vs South Alabama 04.19.25

Louisiana Collects Road Series Win in San Marcos

4/27/2025 4:20:00 PM | Softball

Home run swing and outfield plays lead to successful end on road trip

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Emily Smith's three-run home run and Maddie Hayden's game-ending, leaping catch secured the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team a 4-3 win over Texas State in the series finale on Sunday, April 27 at Bobcat Softball Stadium in San Marcos, Texas.

The result gave Louisiana (25-24, 11-10 SBC) a conference series win for the second straight weekend.

Smith (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) kept Bobcats reliever Madison Azua scuffling in the third inning, her home run following up Maddie Hayden's hustle double and Dayzja Williams' bunt single. The three-run blast expanded the Cajuns' advantage to 4-0.

Mallory Wheeler (6.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 6 K) kept Texas State (31-18, 13-8 SBC) off-balance and carried a shutout into the seventh inning.

The outfield defense kept the Bobcats from successfully advancing a runner past second base through the first six frames.

Williams came up with the first of two outfield assists she'd record when her throw from right field led to a tag out for the final out of the fourth inning. Later in the sixth inning, she threw out the baserunner after a leadoff single which led to another scoreless frame being posted.

When the Bobcats rallied in the bottom of the seventh, trimming the UL lead to 4-3 after Keely Williams' two-run double, the outfield defense made another critical stop.

With the winning run at first base it was Maddie Hayden sliding over from her center field position to make a leaping catch on the run in left center field to prevent Karmyn Bass' low-line drive fly ball from rolling to the wall.

Hayden's heroic catch helped Tyra Clary collect the one-out save that secured the first road SBC series win of the Alyson Habetz era.

The decisive home run was Smith's second of the series and it brought her series RBI total to six. She increased her season RBI total to 40 RBI moving her 12 clear of the next active player on the roster in her drive to be the first true freshman to be the sole leader in RBI since 2004 (Holly Tankersley).

Williams (2-for-4) posted her second multiple-hit game of the series and third over the past two weekends. She batted 6-of-11 off of Bobcats pitching, scored three runs and finished with three outfield assists.

Wheeler (10-8, 3.79 ERA) was credited with the 10th win of her collegiate campaign, extending her personal undefeated streak to three games over the past six appearances. She struck out six batters including three of the top four hitters in the Bobcats' lineup.

Clary recorded the first save of the season for the UL pitching staff as she continued to excel in a relief role. Over the past two weekends she's allowed only one run over seven innings of work out of the bullpen.

Louisiana claimed the SBC series win over Texas State for the 12th time in as many tries since the Bobcats joined the conference in 2014. The Cajuns now hold a 26-7 lead in SBC regular season play.
