SB Mallory Wheeler Celebrates No-Hitter vs. USM 05.01.25

Cajuns Start USM Series with a No-Hitter by Mallory Wheeler

5/1/2025 10:09:00 PM | Softball

Louisiana climbs up to a fourth-place tie in the SBC standings

LAFAYETTE Mallory Wheeler pitched a no-hitter in guiding the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team to a 2-0 win over Southern Miss in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference series at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park on Thursday, May 1.

Wheeler (7.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K) faced only one batter over the minimum in collecting the first no-hitter of her collegiate career and the first in a seven inning game by a Cajuns pitcher since Karly Heath in February 2023.

Louisiana (26-24, 12-10 SBC) won for the seventh time in the last eight conference games and moved into a fourth place tie in the SBC standings.

There were 12 ground ball outs induced by Wheeler, but it was her recovery after a line drive in the fifth inning took the glove off of her hand to locate the ball and fire the throw to first base for the out that saved the no hitter. The very next play, first baseman Emily Smith solidified the no-hitter with her leaping catch of a rising line drive.

The offense rewarded Wheeler and Smith for the defensive gems in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

Maddie Hayden (2-for-3, run) beat out an infield single, then Dayzja Williams (2-for-3, run) pushed a bunt up the first base line drawing an open base for a hit of her own. USM first baseman Ryanna Valdivia mistakenly threw to an empty bag which allowed Hayden to speed the entire way home for the game's first run.

Smith (2-for-3, RBI) delivered additional breathing room for Wheeler's final two innings when she promptly deposited an RBI single into left field advancing the lead to 2-0.

Wheeler and the defense handled the rest, retiring the Golden Eagles (23-26, 10-11 SBC) in order in their final six trips to the plate. A mixture of ground balls and line drives caught completed UL's first no-hitter of the 2025 season.

Hayden, Williams, Smith and Savannah White each recorded a two-hit game. The Cajuns 1-2-3 hitters (Hayden, Williams, Smith) finished 6-for-9.

Williams notched her fourth multiple-hit game in the two weeks. Since the South Alabama series, when she entered the No. 2 spot after Cecilia Vasquez's injury, she's batting .478 (11-of-23) in SBC play.

Smith notched an RBI for the fourth straight game, pushed her SBC play total to 22 RBI and her season total to 41 RBI as she closes in on becoming the first true freshman to be the sole RBI leader since 2004 (Holly Tankersely).

Wheeler extended her scoreless innings pitched streak at Lamson Park to 14-1/3 innings dating back to the Easter Weekend series vs. South Alabama. It was her fourth start of two runs or fewer allowed since April 8.
