Terrific pitching performance by Clary and Wheeler set up the walk-off hit by Williams
LAFAYETTE – Dayzja Williams sent the home crowd home happy after her walk-off single in the eighth inning gave Louisiana a 2-1 win over South Alabama in the series opener on Thursday at Lamson Park.
Tyra Clary and Mallory Wheeler were dominant in the circle all night. Clary allowed just one run over 5.1 innings, taking a no-hitter into the fourth. Wheeler improved to 9-8 on the year after throwing 2.2 shutout innings of relief.
Offensively, the Cajuns were also kept off the scoreboard until the late innings despite racking up 10 hits. Maddie Hayden, Kayla Falterman, and Mia Liscano led the way with two hits each.
After Clary retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Cajuns threatened in their half of the inning with two outs. Emily Smith singled before a pitch hit Sam Roe, and Falterman singled to center to load the bases. The rally ended when Mia Norwood flew out to center to end the inning.
Both pitchers settled in, and Clary didn't allow a base runner until a clean single to center with two outs in the fourth inning. In the fifth, the Jags threatened with back-to-back singles with two out, but Clary escaped trouble with a ground ball to end the inning.
Louisiana put a pair on to start their half of the fifth with singles by Erin Ardoin and Mia Liscano. The pair moved into scoring position after a wild pitch, but that rally ended with a flyout to center by Smith.
It was the Jaguars that broke through and scored the first run of the game in the sixth. They led off the inning with a double andafter a pair of sacrifice bunts took a 1-0 lead, chasing Clary from the ballgame with two on and one out. Wheeler entered the circle with first and second, one out, and escaped the jam with a fielder's choice and a strikeout.
The Ragin' Cajuns threatened again in the sixth. Roe opened the inning with a single before being lifted for pinch-runner McKayla Ferguson. A sac bunt moved Ferguson into scoring position before Gabbie Stutes was plunked and Ardoin walked to load the bases with two outs. The threat ended with a pop-up, sending the game to the seventh.
Wheeler worked around a lead-off walk, sending the game to the bottom of the inning with the Cajuns still trailing 1-0. Hayden singled to open the inning before Williams reached on an error to put two on with nobody out. Louisiana loaded the bases with one out for Falterman, who singled through the right side to plate Williams and tie the score, eventually sending it to extra innings.
After holding the Jags scoreless in the top of the inning, Louisiana's bats went to work in the bottom half. Liscano started things with a one-out single, and Hayden followed with a single to center. With the infield playing in, Williams slapped the ball towards left, it deflected off the shortstop's glove and trickled far enough away to allow Liscano to score the game-winning run.
These two sides face off in the second game of a three-game series tomorrow at 6 p.m. from Lamson Park.
