Louisiana extended its winning streak to three behind a total team effort
LAFAYETTE – Everything was working for Louisiana on Friday in an 8-0 win over South Alabama at Lamson Park.
Maddie Hayden stole the show on her senior night, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, stealing a base, and driving in a run. She also robbed South Alabama of a home run in the top half of the sixth to preserve the shutout.
Sam Ryan was the beneficiary of Hayden's terrific defensive play. She pitched 6.0 shutout innings in the circle and didn't allow a hit after the third inning to earn her fifth win of the year. Erin Ardoin had a pair of hits and scored twice, while last night's hero, Dayzja Williams, had a pair of base knocks and drove in the final run in the run-rule victory.
After Ryan worked around a two-out single in the top of the first, the Cajun offense went to work. Hayden led things off with an infield single. Williams followed with a bunt single that moved Hayden all the way to third while Williams advanced to second on the throw. Emily Smith singled home Hayden for the 1-0 lead just three batters into the game. Sam Roe brought home another run on a sac bunt, and two batters later, Mia Norwood's ground ball put Louisiana ahead 3-0.
The Jaguars threatened in their half of the second but stranded runners at second and third. In the bottom of the inning, the Cajuns took advantage of defensive miscues to add to the lead. Ardoin reached on a fielding error and advanced to second after the ensuing throw got by first base. She would score on a single by Hayden to make it 4-0. Hayden did the work herself to plate another run. She stole second, and the throw bounced into left field, allowing her to motor home and take a five-run advantage.
The score held there until the bottom of the sixth. Gabbie Stutes singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a bunt single by Ardoin. Those two came into score on a ground ball by Hayden, when it was thrown into right field by South Alabama, attempting to get Ardoin at second base. That miscue brought home two, making it 7-0, and allowed Hayden to race around to third. Williams ended the night two pitches later when her sacrifice fly scored Hayden for the 8-0 win.
Louisiana goes for the sweep tomorrow against South Alabama with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. from Lamson Park.
