Cajuns Exact Revenge on Dukes in Series Finale
4/13/2025 4:20:00 PM | Softball
Louisiana builds early lead, protects it and Gabbie Stutes stirs the knockout punch
Â
For the second straight day the Ragin' Cajuns (20-22, 6-9 SBC) pushed across multiple runs in the first inning. A two-out error opened the door for the first run and Erin Ardoin (2-for-3, RBI) added an RBI single to give UL a quick 2-0 edge.
Â
On this day there would be no answer back by the visiting Dukes (18-21, 5-10 SBC) as Wheeler retired the side in order for the all-important zero on the board after being provided the lead. The offense snuck in another run in the bottom of the second to give Wheeler (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB 2 K) a 3-0 lead that she was up to the task at protecting.
Â
JMU scratched for two runs in the top of the third but after a sacrifice fly cut the UL lead to 3-2 a ground ball out was induced by Wheeler to hold the tying run in scoring position.
Â
From there, Wheeler pitched three consecutive scoreless innings – no runner advancing past second base –and Tyra Clary closed in the seventh.
Â
JMU reliever Kirsten Fleet (4.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) matched Wheeler's efforts holding the score at 3-2 until Louisiana's Gabbie Stutes (2-for-3, 3 RBI) ignited the pull away in her final two trips to the plate.
Â
With the bases loaded due to the Dukes' mishandling of an earlier sacrifice bunt attempt, it was Stutes who pelted a two-run single through the left side spreading out the Cajuns' advantage to 5-2. It became a four-run frame following Laney Credeur's pinch hit sacrifice fly and Maddie Hayden's infield single.
Â
Two-out hits from Cecilia Vasquez (2-for-3, two runs) and Ardoin kept the bottom of the sixth going for another Stutes run-scoring delivery that led to a second consecutive crooked number increasing the lead to 9-2, leaving no doubt in the outcome.
Â
Louisiana rebounded from back-to-back one-run losses to JMU to start the series. The Cajuns won a series finale for the third straight weekend to avoid a sweep.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns offense generated 12 hits to bring its series-closing total to 23 hits over the final two games. It marked the first back-to-back double-digit hit outings since early February.
Â
Stutes' three RBI marked her season-high total, her multiple-RBI effort charging the Cajuns to their season-high tying total of nine runs. UL closed the series producing 16 runs over the final two games.
Â
Wheeler turned in her third quality start of the week, holding the opposition to two runs or less in as many opportunities. She finished the week yielding just five runs over 19 innings of work, spread amongst starts against LA Tech and James Madison, and recorded 15 strikeouts.
Â
Stutes was joined by Kayla Falterman (2-for-4, run, RBI), Ardoin and Vasquez in posting two-hit efforts. Sam Roe's walk in the first inning increased her reached base streak to 19 consecutive games (dates back to SBC Opening Weekend).
