Elfrid Payton Elected to the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame

Payton scored 1,426 points in his career and led Louisiana to a Sun Belt Conference title in 2013-14
LAFAYETTE -Â The Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches announced the induction of Elfrid Payton to the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the organization announced on Tuesday. Payton was voted in by a panel of the state's men's college basketball head coaches.Â
Payton was a superstar in three seasons with the Ragin' Cajuns. Signed out of John Ehret High School, Payton finished his Cajun career with 1,426 points and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
He broke out as a sophomore, scoring 525 points and leading the Sun Belt Conference in assists with 181 and steals with 80. His junior season was a huge one, leading the conference in points, assists, steals, minutes, two-pointers made, attempts, free throws made, and free throws attempted. Payton led the Cajuns to the NCAA Tournament, beating Georgia State in the championship game, and was named the National and SBC Defensive Player of the Year.
The two-time First Team All-SBC honoree declared for the 2014 NBA Draft, where he was selected 10th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers before being dealt to the Orlando Magic in a draft-night trade. Payton's professional career saw him earn NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2015, and in 202,4 he was named All-NBA G League Third Team after leading the league in assists.Â
The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 3, in Baton Rouge as part of the LABC's 51st Annual Awards Banquet.
