Skylah Travis’ double-double charged the Ragin’ Cajuns efforts on both ends
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Despite a spirited defensive effort, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team came up short against Marshall, 48-46, in the third round of Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday, March 6 at the Pensacola Bay Center.
Skylah Travis led the Cajuns with 13 points and 15 rebounds off the bench for her fourth double-double in the past month. Tamiah Robinson added nine points, eight rebounds and five assists in the effort.
Louisiana held the Thundering Herd to just 26 percent shooting, 16-of-61, from the field but the defending tournament champions hit nine three-pointers to Louisiana's two.
The Ragin' Cajuns (13-16) were dealt an early exit from the SBC Championship Tournament, falling in their initial contest in the event after receiving a bye from the first two days of competition. Marshall (14-19) won for the third time in as many days to advance to a fourth round game with App State on Friday, March 7.
The Thundering Herd finished with the upper hand in the rematch with the Ragin' Cajuns – albeit in a totally contrasting fashion to the 92-88 overtime affair the teams played at the Cajundome back on February 5.
It took a bit for both offenses to find their footing, Marshall feeling the effects of playing their third game in as many days while the Ragin' Cajuns having been off the court for nearly a week's time. There were just a combined two field goal makes over the first four minutes.
Erica Lafayette knocked down an early three and Kamryn Jones followed with a layup for a 7-3 lead by the 3:33 mark. Robinson's three at the end of the quarter gave Louisiana a 14-6 lead after 10 minutes.
Ashlyn Jones scored on the team's first possession of the second quarter to push the lead to 10, but the Herd responded with a 5-0 run to cut the Cajun lead in half. Louisiana answered with a 6-1 run to go back up by 10 at 22-12, capped by a jumper in the lane by Robinson at 4:22.
A pair of threes got Marshall back into the game as part of a 10-1 run to make it a one-possession game as the one-minute mark of the opening half approached. Jones hit a pair of free throws to close the half with Louisiana leading 25-22.
Louisiana stretched the lead to six early in the third quarter but back-to-back threes by the Herd tied the score at 29-all. The scoring run stretched to 11-0 giving Marshall a 34-29 lead and prompting a Cajuns timeout at the 4:28 mark.
The Ragin' Cajuns responded quickly, scoring the next eight points to jump back in front, the final push being a pair of buckets by Lanay Wheaton opening a 37-34 edge with 1:28 to go before the final quarter.
Louisiana remained ahead until a free throw by Marshall's CC Mays tied the game at 42-apiece with 4:57 left in regulation. The Thundering Herd remained in the game despite the Cajuns defense yielding only one field goal the first five minutes of the decisive quarter.
Travis put Louisiana ahead 44-42 with a layup with just under three minutes to play, but 24 seconds later another three by the Herd afforded them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Ragin' Cajuns had two chances in the final 30 seconds to tie or take the lead thanks to a Marshall turnover and missed free throw. However, they committed a turnover of their own and Robinson's heave in the final seconds came up short.
The loss eliminated UL from the SBC Championship Tournament and conclude the team's 2024-25 season.
