Hits home to walk it off on her Senior Day at Lamson Park
LAFAYETTE– The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team treated the Lamson Park faithful to a thrilling come-from-behind win in the squad's return home on Friday, March 21, tying the game with two outs in the seventh and then walking off with a 5-3 (8 inn.) win over ULM an inning later.
Louisiana (15-13, 2-2 SBC) entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 3-0, but would be knocking on the door after loading the bases with a free pass off a Warhawks error and pair of walks.
ULM (22-12, 3-1 SBC) appeared to dance around the pressure-packed situation with a strikeout looking for the second out. That's when Kayla Falterman entered the picture.
With her team down to its last out, the crafty veteran Falterman (1-for-4, double, 3 RBI) would poke the ball deep into the left center gap which cleared the bases evening the score at 3-all. The Warhawks had new life momentarily as Falterman was tracked down attempting to make it back to second base on the double.
The Ragin' Cajuns and pitcher Tyra Clary (8.0 IP, 7 H 3 R, 0 BB, 2 K) kept the momentum on their side when a double play ball was rolled to Cecilia Vasquez to end ULM's time at the plate in the first extra inning.
Three batters into the bottom of the eighth, the Ragin' Cajuns found their hero in senior Sam Roe.
Roe, celebrating her Senior Day, took full advantage of an at bat extended by an illegal pitch – which wiped out what would've been a ground out. After a foul ball, Roe (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) launched a two-run home run to straightaway center that finished the comeback and handed UL the series lead.
Roe's heroics were the exclamation point on Louisiana's third seventh inning rally for a come-from-behind win at Lamson Park in head coach Alyson Habetz's debut campaign. The Cajuns pulled the feat in February against Ole Miss and Houston.
The Ragin' Cajuns came away victorious in the SBC home opener and kept their overall season record above the .500 mark. It was UL's 12th straight series win over ULM.
The outcome was a reward for Clary and the Cajuns defense which successfully didn't give away freebies – zero walks allowed and no errors committed. Clary turned in her longest outing of the season and first start without any walks allowed.
It was also rewarding for the team's offense which stayed the course despite being held scoreless and to just two hits over the first six innings of play against ULM starting pitcher Maddie Nichols. The seventh inning push led to the third win when trailing after six and kept the squad undefeated in extra innings (2-0).
The Warhawks got three solo home runs in the first four innings, but nothing more off of Clary who had two key strikeout lookings in the seventh and went on to retire five of the last six she faced.
ULM made the lone error in the contest, and it proved to be the crack in door the Ragin' Cajuns had been looking for. Savannah White and pinch hitter Gabbie Stutes drew two key walks which set the stage for Falterman to deliver the lifeline that brought the game to extra innings.
Falterman extended her hitting streak to four games and notched her third multiple-RBI game. She upped her season RBI total to 13 which is a new career-high surpassing the 11 RBI posted as a freshman in 2022.
Roe posted her second home run in SBC play and third multiple-RBI effort in four league outings. She's now delivered nine RBI in SBC action which has increased her season total to 15 RBI, second-best on the team.
Friday's game marked the first time in 28 days that Louisiana stepped foot on its home field. The Cajuns had last played at Lamson Park on February 22.
