Louisiana flipped the board in the first inning by scoring four runs before ULM could collect an out
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team delivered a prompt response to early runs scored by ULM and went on to score in five consecutive innings in building its advantage in a 9-3 win on Saturday, March 22 that clinched the series victory over ULM at Lamson Park.
After the Warhawks scratched for two unearned runs in the top of the first, the Ragin' Cajuns went straight to work – scoring four runs before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good.
Maddie Hayden walked and Kayla Falterman laid down a bunt single, then after a wild pitch both snuck across home plate on separate plays to even the score. Afterwards, Emily Smith uncorked the first of two home runs she'd hit and Louisiana (16-13, 3-2 SBC) rose ahead 4-2.
Mallory Wheeler (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) was re-energized following the Cajuns' rapid response, holding the Warhawks (22-13, 3-2 SBC) scoreless until the sixth inning.
With Wheeler protecting the lead, not allowing a Warhawk runner past second base until the sixth inning tally, the UL offense continued stacking runs, extending the unanswered tallies total to nine.
The Cajuns created distance with single runs off a Hayden squeeze bunt in the second inning and Sam Roe's RBI single in the third inning, then the final blow was delivered in the fourth inning when Falterman's looping single into left field got by the defender allowing two runs to cross, including Falterman (3-for-4), and make it 8-2.
Smith (3-for-3, 2 HR, 3 RBI) clinched her first multi-home run game as a collegiate player when she led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo launch to right field that closed the Cajuns scoring.
The lone blemish in Wheeler's dominant effort came in the sixth after a leadoff double, but she quickly recovered to retire the final six Warhawks who stepped up to the plate.
Louisiana, back at Lamson Park for the first time since February 22, stretched its home win streak to four games, improving to 10-4 on its home turf.
The Ragin' Cajuns extended their series win streak over the Warhawks to 13 straight games and won the SBC series between the two in-state programs for the 18th time in as many tries. UL increased its all-time series lead to 124-28.
Smith posted her second three-hit game and fifth multi-hit game overall. She moved to 4-for-5 (.800) with two home runs and three RBI in her Sun Belt Conference weekend debut (missed Marshall series with injury).
Falterman extended her hitting streak to five games, collected her second three-hit game of the season and upped her team-leading overall batting average to .425.
Roe (2-for-2, RBI) continued her hot start to SBC play, posting her fourth multiple-hit game in five conference outings and increasing her SBC-only batting average to .600 (9-of-15). The RBI single in the third was her 10th RBI through five conference games.
Wheeler delivered her team-leading fifth complete game and earned her team-leading sixth victory. Her effort Saturday, combined with Tyra Clary's outing in the series opener, extended the pitching staff's string of consecutive innings without a walk allowed in the ULM series to 15 straight.
