Marshall pieces together big first inning that held up in rubber game
Marshall sent 13 batters to the plate in its first at bat and went on to push across seven runs – a sequence set in motion when a popped up sacrifice bunt attempt fell behind the Ragin' Cajuns defense.
Louisiana (14-12, 1-2 SBC) sliced its deficit in half in the third inning after Sam Roe's three-run home run trimmed the Herd's lead to 7-4. That's the closest the Cajuns would get as Marshall's Bub Feringa yielded just one more hit the rest of the way.
The loss in the rubber game of the series brought an end to Louisiana's NCAA-record streak of 89 consecutive conference series won which began back in March 2013.
The Ragin' Cajuns now stand 6-8 on their current 15-game road trip that began back on February 28 in Auburn's Jane B. Moore Memorial. The road-laden stretch ends on Tuesday, March 18 at McNeese.
UL struck first in the contest after Maddie Hayden (2-for-3) led off the game with a single was sacrificed to second by Kayla Falterman and scored on Roe's clutch two-out RBI single.
Brooklyn Ulrich coaxed a nine-pitch walk in the bottom of the first, then the ill-time play for the Cajuns got the wheels moving for Marshall (14-13, 2-1 SBC). The pop up on the sac bunt attempt that landed for a single was followed by a walk that loaded the bases.
After a bases loaded walk knotted the score Mallory Wheeler induced a pop up, however the momentum didn't shift sides. Three straight singles began the separation and before Bethaney Noble could get the next out of the inning the Herd had reached the seven-run total for a 7-1 lead.
Hayden and Falterman were the catalyst of another run-scoring frame for the Cajuns in the third inning, a single and walk, respectively, setting up Roe's big blast that pulled the team within three runs.
Noble turned in three consecutive scoreless innings of relief to keep the deficit at 7-4 entering the fifth inning. Marshall secured the win behind a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fifth that led to three runs and a 10-4 advantage.
Roe capped off her solid showing on SBC Opening Weekend with a 2-for-3 performance that brought her three-game series total to 6-of-9 (.667). Her RBI single and three-run home run made her responsible for all four of Louisiana's RBI and increased her team-leading series total to 7 RBI.
Hayden posted her team-leading 11th multiple-hit game, overall, and the fourth in the past six outings. Roe exited the weekend on a three-game hitting streak and with her first two multiple-RBI efforts of the season.
Wheeler (0.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 2 BB) was handed just the second loss of her rookie campaign, unable to complete the first inning. Cajuns pitchers issued a season-high eight walks and yielded a season-high 11 earned runs.
Saturday's game wrapped up the first-ever SBC series between Louisiana and Marshall since the Thundering Herd joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2023.
