Cajuns Late-Game Push Spoiled by McNeese’s Timely Defensive Plays

Louisiana was poised to finish rally and take the lead in the fifth and sixth inning
LAKE CHARLES – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team had McNeese backed into a corner in the fifth and sixth innings with a chance to take the lead only to have the Cowgirls find the defensive play that preserved their 5-4 win on Tuesday, March 18 at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond in Lake Charles.
Louisiana (14-13) was on the verge of completing a comeback after Maddie Hayden's bases-clearing triple and Kayla Falterman's single that followed trimmed the McNeese lead to 5-4 in the fifth inning.
The Cowgirls (18-13) danced around the fifth inning threat when a hard-struck ball by Cecilia Vasquez was turned into a lineout double play.
The Ragin' Cajuns kept the pressure on as Bethaney Noble (4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 K) continued her scoreless relief effort by retiring McNeese in order in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Louisiana continued the pushback the next half inning as Sam Roe walked, Laney Credeur executed a bunt single and McKayla Ferguson drew a one-out walk to load the bases.
The Cowgirls would escape the secondary late-game threat with a double play ball and reliever Ryann Schexnayder (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R) retired UL in order in the seventh inning to complete the save.
McNeese earned a split of the season series with the victory and snapped Louisiana's six-game series win streak. The Ragin' Cajuns remained winless in midweek games.
Louisiana wrapped up its season-long, 15-game road trip with Tuesday's contest, finishing with a 6-9 mark.
The Ragin' Cajuns struck first as Hayden (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI) singled on the game's first pitch, took second on a fielding error and later scored on Vasquez's sacrifice fly.
The Cowgirls drew even in their first at bat with a Nyjah Fontenot RBI single and the score remained knotted as Sam Ryan (1.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER) induced a pop up to work around a bases loaded jam.
McNeese would load the bases again in the second inning, however Ryan and the Cajuns defense were not as fortunate to escape damage the second go-round. Two runs apiece scored on back-to-back base hits from Jada Munoz (single) and Fontenot (double) staking the Cowgirls to a 5-1 advantage.
Noble began stringing together her scoreless innings pitched and the score held until the Ragin' Cajuns were able to chase McNeese starting pitcher Kadence Williams after Hayden's RBI triple.
Hayden posted her team-leading 12th multiple-hit game, the fifth in the last seven games, and posted her first multiple-RBI game of the season. Falterman joined Hayden in tallying two hits, netting her eighth multiple-hit game and upping her season batting average to .415.
Vasquez made it 17 games with at least one RBI with her sacrifice fly in the first inning. She increased her team-leading and personal-best season RBI total to 28.
Noble continued to shine in the reliever's role, turning in her fourth scoreless performance in a relief outing. In eight relief outings overall, she's yielded only nine runs and struck out 27 over 28 innings and has a 2.25 ERA.
