Cajuns and Herd Split Sun Belt Opening Day Doubleheader

3/14/2025 10:39:00 PM | Softball

Louisiana takes momentum into Saturday after taking Game 2 to even the series

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team split a pair of games with Marshall on the opening day of Sun Belt Conference play at Dot Hicks Field in Huntington, West Virginia, having a late lead slip away in Game 1 and the home run ball and lockdown pitching direct the rebound victory in Game 2.

The Ragin' Cajuns (14-11, 1-1 SBC) overcame a 3-0 deficit in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader, pulling ahead 5-4 in the fourth inning with Sam Roe's third RBI of the contest.

The Thundering Herd (13-13, 1-1 SBC) staged a rally in the sixth inning as three doubles in the frame led to two runs that lifted the hosts to a 6-5 win.

Louisiana quickly rebounded by starting the scoring in the nightcap with Cecilia Vasquez's two-run homer in the first inning and later a two-run homer from Savannah White in the fifth inning advancing the lead to 5-0.

Bethaney Noble (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 K) controlled Marshall's bats with 6-2/3 consecutive innings of scoreless softball pitched and the Ragin' Cajuns went on to win 7-1.

The two teams will play the rubber match of the series at 3:00 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday, March 15. Louisiana will attempt to extend its streak of consecutive SBC series won, which dates back to March 2013, to 90.

GAME 1
Friday's play marked the first regular season matchup since the Thundering Herd joined the Sun Belt in 2023 and the hosts grabbed hold of the momentum first with a three-run home run from Rielly Lucas just three batters into the game.

Roe's productive day started in the third inning when her two-run double completed the Cajuns capitalizing on Herd miscues and evened the score at 3-all.

Marshall loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but could only scratch one run off a sacrifice fly as Sam Ryan entered in relief and halted the progress. In the next half inning Louisiana gained its first lead when Roe (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI) beat out an infield single.

It remained 5-4 in UL's favor until the Thundering Herd loosened Ryan's grip in her relief effort by unleashing three one-out doubles with rally starters Haleigh Adkins and Brooklyn Ulrich both scoring. The Cajuns placed the tying run in scoring position in the seventh after a double from White but she was stranded.

GAME 2
Like Marshall did in the opener, the Ragin' Cajuns took a lead three batters into the game when Vasquez took the first pitch she saw and deposited it over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead.

That would be all the offense Noble would need as she held the Herd to an 0-for-4 showing with runners in scoring position and 0-for-11 with runners on base. Until a two-out home run in the seventh inning that spoiled her first complete game shutout, Noble did not allow a single runner to safely advance past second base through 26 batters faced.

While Noble posted zeroes on the scoreboard a clutch two-out single from Roe (2-for-2) set up Vasquez scoring on a wild pitch in the third and in the fifth Roe walked ahead of White who lifted her first home run as a Cajun to left field stretching the advantage to 5-0.

Louisiana created lots of foot traffic off of the Herd's third and fourth relievers in the final two innings leading to single runs scoring off a White single through the right side in the sixth and Maddie Hayden's bases-loaded ground out in the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Roe (4-for-6) and White (4-for-7) were Louisiana's standouts at the plate in the twinbill, both tallying four hits and three RBI. It was the first multiple-hit games for Roe since mid-February while White set season-highs for hits (3) and RBI (3) in Game 2.

Vasquez was tied for team-leading RBI honors on the day, her three advancing her team season-leading figure to 27 RBI. With RBI in both games she's now driven in at least one run in 16 of 25 games this season.

Noble turned the Tide for the Cajuns pitching staff, slicing the amount of hits Marshall posted in half from the opening game and limiting them to a .154 average.

UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
Louisiana and Marshall take the field at Dot Hicks Field in Huntington, West Virginia for the series finale of the Sun Belt Opening Weekend series on Saturday, March 15 at 3:00 p.m. (CDT).

The Ragin' Cajuns will be playing in a rubber match of a SBC series on the road for the first time since April 2023 at Troy. The team will seek to extend the string of consecutive SBC series won which stood at 89 straight entering the weekend.
