Louisiana Captures Two Wins to Start Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational I

Day capped off by walking off Ole Miss in extras to keep win streak alive
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team extended its win streak to five games after posting a pair of wins on the opening day of the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational I on Friday, February 14 at Lamson Park.
Louisiana (5-2) started off with a 4-1 win over Northern Illinois after Cecilia Vasquez's two-run home run in the bottom of the first provided the lead for good. Sam Ryan (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 K) and the defense combined to shut down the Huskies after an unearned run in the first inning.
The Ragin' Cajuns added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, a reward for Ryan who closed the game retiring the final 11 batters that she faced.
Vasquez (2-for-3, double, HR, 2 RBI) picked up her team-leading third multiple-RBI game of the young season. Ryan collected her second complete game in as many starts, once again not yielding any earned runs.
In the nightcap, UL rallied for an exhilarating 6-5 (9 inn.) win over Ole Miss in extra innings. The Cajuns plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extras before walking it off with Mia Liscano legging out an infield single in the ninth.
Freshman pitcher Mallory Wheeler pitched a complete game, settling in after the Rebels plated five runs in the first four innings. Over the final five innings, Wheeler pitched a shutout of Ole Miss and closed by working with her defense to escape a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning.
Louisiana's comeback began with its patented short game as Maddie Hayden's leadoff bunt single and Vasquez's successful sacrifice set the Cajuns up with two runners in scoring position in the seventh. Emily Smith drove a ball to shortstop to plate the first run, then Laney Credeur followed with a single through the right side to even the score at 5-all.
Both teams took turns working out of bases loaded jams and the deadlock lasted until a pair of walks, coerced by Sam Roe and Savannah White, plus a wild pitch set the stage for Liscano's heroics.
Hayden's hit that sparked the seventh inning rally was her team-leading third of the game (3-for-5). Smith (2-for-5, 2 RBI) took her turn delivering the key multiple-RBI effort.

Louisiana is scheduled to play just once on Saturday, February 15, taking on Sam Houston at 1:00 p.m. at Lamson Park in the last contest of an abbreviated day in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational I due to expected rain in the evening hours.
