Ragin’ Cajuns Enjoy Highly Successful Road Debut

Louisiana claims wins over Rutgers and McNeese on opening day of Jane B. Moore Memorial in Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team had a successful road debut on Friday, February 28 capturing a 5-0 win over Rutgers and 4-1 win over McNeese on Day 1 of the Jane B. Moore Memorial tournament in Auburn, Alabama.

The shutout of Rutgers to start the day marked the first shutout of the season for Louisiana (10-4) and the first road win of Alyson Habetz's tenure.

The McNeese win which followed secured the 1,900th all-time win in program history for the Ragin' Cajuns.

Mallory Wheeler (6.0 IP, 1 H, 4 K) and Bethaney Noble (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K) combined for the two-hit shutout of the Scarlet Knights (7-10) which made for a successful road debut for Habetz and crew.

The top of the lineup helped UL take charge in the third inning. Maddie Hayden, Kayla Falterman and Cecilia Vasquez all reached base before an out was recorded – and the Cajuns already had a 1-0 lead thanks for Falterman's double to the center field wall.

Falterman later stole home and Laney Credeur poked an RBI single into right field to plate Vasquez for a 3-0 advantage.

Emily Smith's two-run home run in the fifth inning, her third straight game homering, provided added breathing room for Wheeler and a 5-0 lead.

Louisiana rapped out 11 hits against Scarlet Knights pitching led by the top of the lineup with each of the first four hitters all posting a two-hit performance. It was the sixth time in 13 games the Cajuns reached double figures in hits.

Smith (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) collected her team-leading fifth home run and momentarily moved into a tie with Vasquez for the team-lead in RBI. Hayden (2-for-4) posted her team-high seventh multiple-hit game while Falterman (2-for-4, double, RBI) and Vasquez (2-for-2) recorded their fifth multiple-hit game.

Against McNeese (10-6), Tyra Clary (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 K) made a successful return to the circle yielding just five hits and a single run, which scored during a rundown on a fielder's choice, in her first appearance since February 8 following an injury.

The third inning was when Louisiana found its spark once again and erased the Cowgirls' 1-0 lead. Mia Liscano started off with a single, Hayden walked and Falterman sacrificed them over to second and third to put the crooked number frame in order.

Vasquez evened things with a sacrifice fly to right field and moments later Hayden scampered home on a passed ball to pull UL ahead 2-1. Before McNeese could slow the Cajuns down Smith and Credeur doubled back-to-back with two outs to push across an additional run.

The offense picked up an insurance run for Clary in the fourth inning after Gabbie Stutes' leadoff single set up a run crossing on Savannah White's double the next at bat.

With the RBI on the sacrifice fly, Vasquez reassumed her spot as the team leader posting her 16th of the season and at least one for the ninth time in 14 games. Stutes went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate to push her season batting average to .500 (10-of-20).

Louisiana stretched its series win streak over to McNeese to six games and moved to 111-26 all-time against the Cowgirls. The two teams will have a rematch in Lake Charles on March 18.
