Louisiana Tops Rutgers, Battles Auburn on Day 2 of Jane B. Moore Memorial

Cajuns use clutch hitting to extend win streak then had Auburn on the ropes entering the sixth

AUBURN, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team extended its win streak to a season-high tying five games by besting Rutgers 5-3 to start the day then bowed out late in a 6-3 loss to No. 19 Auburn on Saturday, March 1 at the Jane B. Moore Memorial Tournament in Auburn, Alabama.

Cecilia Vasquez (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI) delivered three of the team's five two-out RBI and Bethaney Noble (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K) shut the door as Louisiana (11-5) collected its second win over Rutgers (7-12) in as many days.

Vasquez kicked off the scoring with her two-out, two-run double leading the Cajuns to a three-spot in the third. The Scarlet Knights danced around a couple scoring threats that could have blown the game open and were able to catch up when a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth evened the score at 3-all.

Noble notched a strikeout to retire Rutgers in the fifth and preserve the tie. Then in the top of the sixth Louisiana delivered again in the clutch with two outs, first Kayla Falterman roping an RBI single to left to snap the tie and Vasquez following up with a single back up the middle to score Falterman and increase the edge to 5-3.

Noble prevented a Scarlet Knights response in the bottom of the sixth by working out of a bases loaded jam and in the seventh inning retired three straight batters, closing with a strikeout, after a leadoff single.

Vasquez picked up her sixth multiple-hit and multiple-RBI effort in the season's 15th game. Noble, who earned her first Division I win last Saturday against Houston in relief, collected a win in relief a second straight Saturday.

The win allowed UL to match its season-best win streak of five games from early February. The Ragin' Cajuns remained undefeated, at 9-0, when either leading or tied after five innings.

In the afternoon bout with Auburn, the 19th-ranked Tigers (17-1) scored two runs in the first inning and managed to stay a step ahead of the Ragin' Cajuns the rest of the way.

Louisiana rallied in the third after Savannah White and Mia Liscano singled back-to-back to start the inning and later both scored. White came home on Maddie Hayden's sacrifice fly while Liscano got a hand on the plate ahead of the tag off a Vasquez grounder to knot the score at 2-all.

The Tigers had a quick response after a one-out double placed two runners into scoring position. A two-run single followed and Auburn went up 4-2.

Noble took over for Mallory Wheeler (2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 K) and began to slow down the Tigers keeping them off the board until the sixth inning.

With Noble holding steady the Cajuns crept back in within a run in the fifth with White starting the rally again. She led off with a single and advanced to third ahead of Falterman's rocket shot single though the left side that sliced the AU lead to 4-3.

Auburn reliever SJ Geurin buckled down retiring seven of the last eight Cajuns and insurance came her way in the bottom of the sixth as the Tigers tacked on runs off an errant throw on a steal attempt and solo home run.

Vasquez picked up an RBI for the 11th time in 16 games as she became the first Cajun this season to reach the 20 RBI-mark. Falterman upped her season RBI total to nine and continued her season-long streak of reaching base to all 16 games.

Noble (3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K) continued to flourish in her role as UL's go-to reliever, giving her team a chance by keeping the Tigers quiet until a few unlucky bounces allowed the hosts to gain breathing room.

The Ragin' Cajuns middle infield defense rolled a pair of ground ball double plays increasing the team's double play total for the season to 13.

Saturday's game marked the first regular season meeting in Auburn between the Cajuns and Tigers. The lone prior matchups at Jane B. Moore Field occurred in the 2015 NCAA Auburn Super Regional.
