IRVINE, Calif. – Pinch-hitter Trip Dobson's two-run single in the top of the eighth inning helped Louisiana forge a 4-4 tie, but No. 20-ranked UC Irvine scored three times in the bottom half of the frame to earn a 7-4 victory in the opening game of a three-game series on Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.
The series resumes on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT with the game streamed live on ESPN+. Fans in the Lafayette area can listen to the game on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Louisiana (5-5) led early on Drew Markle's solo home run in the first for a 1-0 lead before UC Irvine (6-3) countered with a two-run blast in the bottom half of the inning by Colin Yeaman.
Markle, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, tied the game for Louisiana in the third when his triple off UCI starter Danny Suarez allowed Brooks Wright to score from first. Rowan Felsch's RBI double into the left-center field gap in the fourth inning scored Chase Call for a 3-2 lead before Call led off the sixth with a solo homer to right off James Trimble.
Louisiana would tie the game in the eighth off UCI reliever Ricky Ojeda when Maddox Mandino led off with a walk and moved to second on Markle's one-out, infield single. Both runners would advance on a double steal before Dobson would drive a 2-and-2 pitch through the right side to plate the duo.
The Anteaters broke the tie in the bottom half, sending nine men to the plate and benefiting from a pair of hit batters and a pair of walks. Will Bermudez's single up the middle off reliever Matthew Holzhammer (0-1) scored Zach Fjelsted and Frankie Carney for a 6-4 lead before UCI added a third run when Anthony Martinez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Ojeda (2-0) earned the win for UC Irvine with Max Martin pitching the ninth to collect his first save. Suarez scattered four hits and struck out 12 in 5.0 innings for the Anteaters.
Chase Morgan allowed four hits and fanned a season-high nine batters in 5.0 innings for Louisiana.
