Cajuns Win Streak Snapped in Loss to Sam Houston

Louisiana undone by extended innings that benefitted the Bearkats
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team was unable to overcome the free passes and extra outs allowed to Sam Houston, falling 8-2 on Saturday, February 15 in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational I at Lamson Park.
There were a total of 13 additional opportunities for the visiting Bearkats amongst the walk, hit by pitches and errors the Ragin' Cajuns yielded. Only two of the eight runs SHSU scored wound up being earned.
With the loss, Louisiana (5-3) saw its five-game win streak come to an end.
The Ragin' Cajuns fell behind in the first inning as three fielding miscues led to four early runs for the Bearkats. A miscue in the outfield in the third inning allowed SHSU (5-5) to add two more unearned runs and put UL in a 6-0 deficit before plating any runs.
Louisiana made an attempt to begin chipping away at the deficit in the third inning when Maddie Hayden and Cecilia Vasquez delivered RBI singles to slice the Bearkats advantage down to 6-2.
Sam Houston countered the next half inning, negating the gains made by the Cajuns when Elia Hebel tripled in a pair of runs to extend the lead to 8-2.
The Cajuns weren't able to respond back as SHSU starting pitcher Amy Abke faced the minimum through the seventh inning.
Pitcher Bethaney Noble gave UL's offense a chance at a late-game rally by tossing three innings of scoreless relief with six strikeouts to close the game.
Sam Ryan (4.0 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 2 ER) was charged with the loss, though it was hard-luck in nature as the Bearkats amount of earned runs scored equald that of what her teammates produced.
Kayla Falterman (1-for-3) stretched her hitting streak to six games, Hayden (2-for-4, run, RBI) posted her team-leading fifth multiple-hit game and Vasquez upped her season RBI total to 10 with a run produced for the sixth time in eight outings on the young season.

Louisiana closes out the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational I at Lamson Park with a doubleheader on Sunday, February 16, beginning at 11:30 a.m. vs. Central Arkansas followed by the second matchup of the weekend with Ole Miss taking place at 2:00 p.m.
