Louisiana Splits Pair on Final Day of Ragin’ Cajuns Invitational I

Offense clicks in rebound win to start the day; Cajuns separated from pitcher’s duel late vs. Ole Miss

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team got production throughout the lineup in a 9-1 (6 inn.) win over Central Arkansas and had a pitcher's duel slip away late in a 5-0 loss to Ole Miss on Sunday, February 16 in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational I at Lamson Park.

All nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one hit as Louisiana (6-4) unleashed 15 hits on Central Arkanas (2-7) in grabbing a bounce back win after Saturday's loss to Sam Houston.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored in each of its final five at bats as they stacked up runs to overcome and then pull away from the Bears after yielding an unearned run in the first inning.

Freshman pitcher Mallory Wheeler (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 6 K) settled in after the first inning, locking down the Bears and closing with three straight hitless innings capped off by retiring the final seven batters faced.

Gabbie Stutes (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) led the charge in overtaking the Bears, her RBI double in the third inning breaking a 1-all tie. An inning later she kept the scoring going with an RBI single that increased the lead to 5-1.

Cecilia Vasquez (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI) set up the run rule triumph with a clutch two-out, two-run single in the fifth that advanced the margin to 8-1. An inning later, Savannah White (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI), who pulled the Cajuns even with an RBI double in the second, squeezed in the walk-off tally with a perfectly executed bunt.

Vasquez collected her first three-hit game of the season, her team-best fourth multiple-RBI effort and increased her team season-leading RBI total to 12. Stutes made her first career start a memorable one, both hits producing a run tying her for game-high honors in RBI.

In the rematch with Ole Miss (8-3) it was Bethaney Noble starting off with four consecutive scoreless frames of no-hit softball pitched as she dueled with the Rebels' Miali Guachino in a scoreless contest.

Ole Miss would be the first to have a breakthrough, snapping the tie in the fifth inning. A double set up the initial run crossing and later on two-out hits from Nos. 2-3 hitters Persy Llamas (double) and Aliyah Binford (single) drove in two more runs opening a 3-0 lead for the visitors.

The Rebels tacked on a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning for added insurance. The Ragin' Cajuns were positioned to draw back in during the bottom half after loading the bases, but Guachino escaped by recording a strikeout.

Kayla Falterman and Maddie Hayden each singled to extend their hitting streaks to eight and six games, respectively. The duo have reached base in all 10 games to start the season.

Noble (7.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 7K) picked up where she left off from Saturday's relief appearance vs. Sam Houston, extending her streak of consecutive no-hit innings tossed to seven straight before the Rebels breakthrough. Sunday's strikeout total brings her total to 13 over the 10 innings thrown her last two appearances.
