Three players score in double figures as Ragin' Cajuns split opening weekend of SBC play
MONROE – De'Vion Lavergne recorded career-highs with 16 points and eight rebounds and Louisiana placed three players in double figures and led wire-to-wire in a 76-62 win at ULM in a Sun Belt Conference men's basketball game on Saturday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Jaxon Olvera came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points with Dorian Finister added 15 as Louisiana (2-11, 1-1 SBC) earned its first victory since November 7 – a span of 10 games – when it defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 58-52.
Todd Jones Jr., scored a season-high nine points and tied a season-best with eight rebounds as the Ragin' Cajuns never trailed and won their fourth straight game over ULM (3-10, 0-2 SBC).
Louisiana, which finished 28-for-54 (51.9 percent) from the floor for the game, made its first four shots and 12 of its first 16 to take a 29-16 lead after Olvera's 3-pointer with 6:57 left in the first half.
Defensively, the Ragin' Cajuns limited ULM to 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) from the floor and two field goals over the final 9:11 of the first half in taking a 39-25 lead at intermission.
Three straight buckets by the Warhawks in the second half, capped by Khristian Lewis' dunk with 11:56 remaining, got ULM to within 52-42, but Olvera would drain a 3-pointer to start a 12-4 run to extend Louisiana's lead to 64-46 with 8:28 left.
Lavergne, who scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, finished 6-for-10 from the floor and was 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc as Louisiana was 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from long range. Olvera was 7-for-15 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers for the Ragin' Cajuns with Finister going 4-for-9 from the floor and dishing out a career-high seven assists.
Jones Jr., a transfer from Portland, finished one point shy of his career-best (10) set last season against Oregon while matching his season-high in rebounds set last week at Louisiana Tech. Joshua Lewis added eight points with a pair of 3-pointers for Louisiana.
Lewis led ULM with 16 points – all in the second half – with Renars Sondors adding 13. Lavell Brodnex barely missed his fifth straight double-double scoring 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Warhawks with MJ Russell adding 11.
ULM finished 15-for-42 (35.7 percent) from the floor and committed 14 turnovers.
Louisiana will take a break for the Christmas holidays before opening a five-game homestand at the Cajundome beginning on Sunday, December 28, with a non-conference matchup against Norfolk State.
The Ragin' Cajuns will return to SBC play on New Year's Eve against South Alabama before return games against Southern Miss (Jan. 3) and ULM (Jan. 8) before capping off the homestand on January 10 against Troy.
