Key Stretches Hinder Louisiana in Matchup with Delta State

As soon as the Ragin’ Cajuns caught up from a slow start, the Lady Statesmen found key scoring runs
LAFAYETTE – Freshman Amijah Price scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team but her effort was overshadowed by Delta State's 76-68 upset victory on Friday, November 7 at the Cajundome.
Â
Louisiana (0-2) worked its way back into the lead in the second quarter capped off by Price feeding Stephanie Mosley for a fastbreak layup and a 23-21 advantage with 4:18 to play before halftime. After a Lady Statesmen layup on the ensuing possession, Imani Daniel's free throw at 3:21 provide the lead again.
Â
Delta State, though, countered with a pair of game-changing scoring runs that put the Ragin' Cajuns into a deficit they wouldn't completely chip away at.
Â
The Lady Statesmen closed the first half with a 9-1 scoring run over the final 2:30 to forge ahead 32-25 entering the locker room.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns made it a one-possession game two minutes into the third quarter as baskets from Price, Marina Artero and Bianca Silva on three straight possessions trimmed the deficit to 34-31 by the 8:02 mark.
Â
The ground made up quickly dissipated for Louisiana over the next three minutes as Delta State scored 13 unanswered points to spread the lead out to 47-31.
Â
Louisiana moved back within single digits twice in the fourth quarter, first on Price's driving layup at 8:19 that made it 55-46 and then again at 6:44 when a pair of Jazmyne Jackson free throws made it 58-50.
Â
Delta State, which outrebounded the Cajuns 53-34, used several key offensive rebounds to obtain six second-chance points while stretching the lead out to its largest at 69-52 with 3:55 remaining.
Â
The first shooting struggles of the young season – exhibition and regular season combined – led to Louisiana's demise. The Ragin' Cajuns finished the game shooting 33 percent (21-of-63) but the mark was well below 30 percent while the Lady Statesmen built their lead. UL was 11-of-44 from the field (25 percent) over the first three quarters.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Price led the Ragin' Cajuns in scoring for the second time in as many regular season games. She landed the first 20-point game of her young collegiate career.
Â
Mikaylah Manley and Jackson joined her in double figures once again by scoring 13 and 12, respectively.
Â
Price was the Louisiana's leading rebounder with nine boards and also led the defensive efforts with six steals.
Â
Louisiana connected on 22-of-31 free throw attempts paced by Price's seven makes on 10 attempts and a 6-of-7 performance from Jackson.
Â
Despite the heavy rebound margin, the Lady Statesmen only held an 18-13 edge in second-chance points. Where Delta State did take full advantage was points in the paint with a commanding 42-24 edge.
