Ragin’ Cajuns spirited effort in rematch in Jonesboro falls just short
JONESBORO, Ark. – The Louisiana Volleyball Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team narrowly missed out on taking the match lead into the fourth set and Arkansas State capitalized to secure a 3-1 win (25-21, 22-25, 28-26, 25-14) and complete a series sweep on Saturday, November 1 at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
With the match tied 1-all, the Ragin' Cajuns (12-10, 4-8 SBC) rallied all the way back from a 16-9 deficit in Set 3 when Kennedy Gustafson's ace forced extra points and a combo block from Chelsea Gilmore and Harley Krause provided a 25-24 lead.
The Red Wolves (16-7, 9-3 SBC) prolonged the frame with a kill from Daedrianna Cail then a block of their own opened a 26-25 lead. Louisiana took its turn fighting off set point with a kill from Cailin Demps evening the score.
ASU would officially put an end to UL's attempt at pulling the match's momentum over to its side by siding out and then getting a set-clinching kill from Cail to be the ones to take the match lead.
The disappointing end to Set 3 seemed to deflate the Ragin' Cajuns as the Red Wolves quickly raced out to a 15-6 lead and their defense forced Louisiana into 11 attack errors and a -.094 hitting percentage (8 K, 11 E, 32 TA) in the final stanza.
Louisiana displayed more energy and a mindset determined to put Friday night's performance behind. The result was 31 kills scored and 42 digs rounded up over the first two sets led to an even split following two sets of play.
Demps, Marlee Ervin and Jazmine Gaston combined for 13 of the team's 15 kills in Set 2 as the Ragin' Cajuns battled through 13 ties and seven lead changes to jump on the board.
Gaston tipped a shot over the ASU block to complete a 4-0 scoring run and maintain separation at 21-19. Later a successful challenge prevented the Red Wolves from forging a 23-all tie, then Ervin followed with a kill to record set point and put the Ragin' Cajuns in a position to claim the match lead.
Louisiana held the upper-hand in kills (52-49) and digs (71-67), but it was Arkansas State's defense that was charged by 14 blocks that led to 35 attack errors by the Ragin' Cajuns which limited their hitting percentage to .102 and offset the offensive advantage.
ASU extended its series win streak over UL to four matches, completing the season sweep for the second straiht year. The Ragin' Cajuns dropped a fifth consecutive contest on the road.

The Ragin' Cajuns also reached double digits in blocks, totaling 11 blocks as a squad led by Gilmore who had a hand in nine blocks.
Louisiana's service was tougher than the night before leading to seven aces. Libero Kennedy Gustafson led the way with three aces and Gilmore joined her in tallying multiple aces with a pair of her own.
