Ragin’ Cajuns offense overpowers the visiting Warhawks
LAFAYETTE – It was a triumphant start to Senior Weekend for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball as the squad posted a straight sets sweep (25-19, 25-12, 25-11) of ULM on Thursday, November 6 at E.K. Long Gym.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns (13-10, 5-8 SBC) eased by the visiting Warhawks (10-17, 1-12 SBC) by hitting .360-plus in all three sets. Louisiana scored 45 kills off of 99 swings on a .374 hitting percentage.
Â
Louisiana led virtually the entire contest, the lone Warhawks lead coming on the first rally of the second set – and it was quickly erased.
Â
Senior opposite hitter Cailin Demps collected a pair of career benchmarks with the 12 kills that she scored. The total increased her season kills figure to 301, which marks a personal single-season best and the first 300-plus kills season of her collegiate career.
Â
Demps was one of five Cajuns to record at least five kills. By comparison, ULM struggled to find any offensive rhythm as only two players were able to score multiple kills.
Â
UL stormed out the gate with 18 kills in the opening set and then nearly doubled up (13-7) and finally nearly tripled (14-5) the Warhawks total in the final two stanzas, respectively.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns constant firepower proved the difference in an opening set that was a four-point margin late at 23-19. The result was sewn up back-to-back kills from Demps and Chelsea Gilmore.
Â
Louisiana built identical 10-6 leads in the following two sets to establish control. What followed each time was an identical 7-2 run that extended the advantage to 17-8 and put the Warhawks away.
Â
The path to a commanding 2-0 lead was paved by the serves of Kennedy Gustafson and Demps who combined to serve up five of the final seven points. The match was clinched when Gilmore, Harley Krause and Jazmine Gaston registered kills in succession to ignite a match-ending 5-0 run.
Â
Louisiana snapped a three-match losing streak and added pressure to Troy as the race for the fifth and final conference tournament spot from the SBC West Division heads down to the wire. The Ragin' Cajuns hold the tiebreaker over the Trojans and with a win on Friday would grab the bid with at least one Troy loss to Southern Miss.
Â
UL defeated ULM for the 15th consecutive meeting, a streak that dates back to the 2019 season. The Ragin' Cajuns hold a 36-5 lead over the Warhawks in the SBC era of the series which began back in 2006.
Â
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Demps' 12 kills gave her the title of match-high honors for the third consecutive match. It marked the 18th time in 23 contests this season to reach double figures in kills.
Â
Marlee Ervin (9), Gaston (7), Grace Sweeney (6) and Gilmore (5) completed the group of five who landed at least five kills leading UL to a 45-23 advantage over ULM.
Â
One match removed from a career-high nine blocks, Gilmore led the Cajuns again on the frontline with four blocks. Gaston and Lindsey Henry threw up three blocks each.
Â
Gustafson claimed match-high honors with 14 digs, hitting double figures for the 13th consecutive match dating back to the SBC opener on September 26. Sophia Armstrong teamed up with her to protect the backline as she accumulated eight digs.
Â
Sweeney added seven more digs and four other Cajuns had four digs as the squad tallied 48 digs (16 per set) in the three-set contest.
Â
Ryleigh Garis (21) and Nene Hawkins (14) combined for 35 of the team's 42 assists. Hawkins was one of five different Cajuns to serve up an ace.
