Ragin’ Cajuns fall in three sets in final non-conference road contest
HAMMOND – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team found itself of the flip side of momentum changes each set and host-Southeastern took advantage in claiming a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) win on Tuesday, September 17 at the University Center in Hammond, La.
The Ragin' Cajuns (2-7) landed double figures in kills all three sets, however the Lady Lions (6-4) matched the feat and finished with 15 or more each time in posting a 46-34 advantage for the contest.
Louisiana was the early aggressor in the first and third sets but unable to hold the leads and wound up being dealt its fifth straight defeat.
Sparked by a pair of aces from Cailin Demps the Ragin' Cajuns raced out to a 5-0 lead to start the match. Later it was back-to-back Jazmine Gaston kills creating a 10-6 lead, then the first momentum switch occurred as the Lady Lions reeled off six straight points to leap ahead 12-10.
Demps' third ace of the opening set put UL in the lead once again at 14-13. SLU responded with a second six-point run and overcame a late Cajuns rally when back-to-back kills upped the lead to 24-21.
Louisiana stormed back from a 9-3 deficit in Set 2 by drawing even. SLU countered with a pair of Kibi Huggins kills to reclaim the lead and carried the advantage to the close of the frame for a 2-0 match lead.
The biggest turn of events of the night came in Set 3 and kept Louisiana from extending the match. Trailing 8-3 the Lady Lions went on an impressive 15-1 run capped off by 11 straight points for an 18-9 lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns' resiliency kicked in, a Chelsea Gilmore middle kill igniting a 5-0 run that prompted an SLU timeout. The SLU lead was later trimmed to 22-20 after Demps and Jaylynn McNeill went back-to-back for kills. An untimely service error broke UL's serve and a Cicily Hildago kill brought the Lady Lions to match point.
Tuesday's match marked Louisiana's first visit to Hammond since September 2015. It was also the Ragin' Cajuns final road non-conference match of the season.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Gaston's 10 kills led the offense followed by Demps with nine kills. Gilmore produced six kills off of only 11 swings on a .455 hitting percentage.
With her team-leading two blocks, Cami Hicks broke the tie with Kim Rodgers and became the program's rally scoring era career blocks record holder. Hicks upped her career total to 398 blocks, leaving her two shy of becoming the first Ragin' Cajun to reach 400 career blocks in the rally scoring era.
Demps' season-best three service aces helped Louisiana to a 7-6 advantage in the category. Lauryn Hill was the other Cajun with multiple aces, serving up a pair.
Libero Mio Yamamoto rounded up a match-high 19 digs. Hill the other active Cajun in picking up Lady Lions' attack attempts as she collected 12 digs.
Meghan Hawkins handed out an assist on 20 of Louisiana's 34 kills.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to E.K. Long Gym to celebrate Alumni Weekend and host the Ragin' Cajuns Classic volleyball tournament from Thursday-Saturday, September 19-21.
Louisiana competes on Thursday vs. Jacksonville State and Friday vs. Florida A&M, both matches beginning at 6:00 p.m.
As part of a united effort with the Junior League of Lafayette, the Louisiana Volleyball program will be collecting unopened packs of diapers on Thursday and Friday to support the Stuff the Sleigh Diaper Drive which will benefit families in need.
