SB Cecilia Vasquez Returns from Home Run vs. Troy 05.03.24

Ragin’ Cajuns Reverse Course to Even Series with Troy

5/3/2024 11:09:00 PM | Softball

No. 17 Louisiana scores 11 unanswered in stunning comeback

LAFAYETTE Cecilia Vasquez and Denali Loecker delivered momentum-changing moments on Friday, May 3 keying the 17th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team's storm back from a 7-0 deficit and on to an 11-7 win over Troy that evened the Sun Belt series at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

With Louisiana (39-16, 21-2 SBC) facing the prospects of remaining in a 7-0 deficit heading to the third inning, Vasquez (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) launched a two-out, two-run home run – and the tables began to turn in the Ragin' Cajuns favor.

Loecker (2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K) slowed the Trojans (33-20, 13-10 SBC) down starting in the second inning, the lone blemish a two-out RBI single. Of the eight outs she recorded, a total of six were of the ground ball variety as she began to drain the energy from the visitors' bats.

Louisiana caught the Trojans an inning after Vasquez's critical home run, a two-run double from Sam Roe (2-for-4, double, RBI) and solo shot from Victoria Valdez (1-for-3, HR, RBI) fueling a five-run third that knotted the score at 7-all.

From that point on Sam Landry pitched 3-1/3 innings of scoreless softball with four strikeouts and Kayla Falterman and Maddie Hayden teamed up to bring the Cajuns over the top.

Falterman led off the fourth and sixth innings with a base hit and both times Hayden drove her home, starting with the game-winning run in the fourth and ending with an insurance tally in the sixth.

Landry's game-closing performance was capped off by three consecutive strikeouts of the heart of the Troy order, starting with Libby Baker, after back-to-back singles began the top of the seventh to place the tying run on deck.

The 11 unanswered runs that created the comeback victory assured the Ragin' Cajuns the chance of extending its nation-leading total of consecutive conference series won to 89 straight. UL rebounded from Thursday's 3-0 loss to Troy and set up the rubber match on Saturday afternoon.

Friday's result inched the Ragin' Cajuns, winners of 30 of the last 34 games since March 3, closer to a 25th consecutive 40-win season – now just one win away of the accomplishment.

For the second straight season Louisiana avenged a series-opening loss to Troy and prevented the Trojans from posting back-to-back wins in the series for the first time. UL increased its all-time series lead to 49-8 which now includes a 26-3 mark at Lamson Park.
