Louisiana to face James Madison-Georgia Southern in elimination game on Thursday
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Old Dominion sent 11 men to the plate in a six-run, fourth inning and the Monarchs kept top-seeded and No. 21-ranked Louisiana off-balanced at the plate in a 7-3 win in the 2024 Guardian Credit Union Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday at Riverwalk Stadium.
Top-seeded Louisiana (40-17) will face the loser of the James Madison-Georgia Southern contest in an elimination game on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
ODU (31-24), the No. 8 seed in the field after defeating South Alabama in an elimination game on Tuesday, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Kenny Levari's solo home run off starter Chase Morgan (4-3) just cleared the right field wall over the outstretched glove of Bryan Broussard, Jr.
ODU starter Blake Morgan retired the first five batters he faced until Caleb Stelly's two-out single up the middle. The left-hander got out of a jam in the third after Louisiana threatened with one-out, back-to-back singles by Broussard and Trey LaFleur. Morgan would fan Conor Higgs before getting Kyle DeBarge to ground to third to end the threat.
A leadoff double by Kyle Edwards, an RBI single by Levari and an RBI double by Luke Waters quickly increased ODU's lead to 3-0 in the fourth before a walk to Jake Ticer chased Morgan, who allowed four hits and struck out five in 3.0 innings of work.
Alex Bouche drew a walk to load the bases and Steven Meier's RBI grounder to second drove in Waters for a 4-0 lead. Evan Holman would follow with a two-run double, and after Maverick Stallings reached on catcher's interference, TJ Aiken singled up the middle to plate Holman and increased the Monarch's lead to 7-0.
Ben Moore (2-1), the second of three pitchers used by ODU, earned the victory after tossing 4.0 hitless innings with five strikeouts. The southpaw retired the first 11 batters he faced until Lee Amedee drew a two-out walk in the seventh.
Louisiana would get on the board in the eighth beginning with LaFleur's solo home run to center off Monarch reliever John Holobetz followed by John Taylor's two-run blast to right.
Taylor and LaFleur had two hits each to lead Louisiana, which was held to seven hits in the contest. DeBarge added a double and scored a run – the 157th of his career to tie him with Damian Grossie (1988-91) – for fourth place in school history.
