Kyle DeBarge rounds second base after his 18th home run of the season on Friday at Georgia Southern

Cajuns Use Big Innings To Run-Rule Georgia Southern, 19-3

Louisiana extends SBC lead to three games with five games remaining

STATESBORO, Ga. – All-America candidate Kyle DeBarge went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in four runs while No. 22-ranked Louisiana used a pair of big innings to earn a 19-3 Sun Belt Conference win in eight innings over Georgia Southern on Friday at J.I. Clements Stadium.

Louisiana (36-15, 19-6 SBC) extended its overall lead to three games over Troy and Southern Miss in the SBC standings with five games remaining. The Ragin' Cajuns hit a combined five home runs in the game with Ben Robichaux and Clay Wargo each hitting pinch-hit blasts to highlight an eight-run, eighth inning.

The series resumes on Saturday at 1 p.m. CDT. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

DeBarge set the tone early for Louisiana when he belted his 18th home run of the season – equaling the most by a Ragin' Cajun since Jonathan Lucroy in 2007 – off Georgia Southern starter Ben Johnson (4-3). The solo blast was DeBarge's eighth in SBC play and moved him to within one of tying the single-season, school-record (19) set by David Alvis (1985) and David King (1989).

Georgia Southern (27-22, 15-10 SBC), which had a seven-game win streak snapped, tied the game at 1-1 in the second on Sean Smith's sacrifice fly before Louisiana would retake the lead in the third when Luke Yuhasz tripled and scored on Trey LaFleur's sacrifice fly to left.

The Eagles would rally in the fourth to forge a 2-2 contest when catcher Sean White hit a leadoff single and scored two batters later on T.J. McKenzie's double to left field.

Louisiana would respond in the fifth with a seven-run inning beginning when Lee Amedee drew a one-out walk, moved to third on Jose Torres' hit-and-run single and scored when Johnson's throw at the plate on a potential putout sailed past White.

Three batters later, DeBarge hit a two-out, bases-clearing double for a 6-2 lead and scored when Taylor hit a mammoth home run to right to chase Johnson.

Duncan Pastore added a single as Louisiana sent 11 men to the plate and scored from second when Caleb Stelly lifted an RBI single to center.

Georgia Southern added a run in the sixth on Sam Blancato's two-out RBI grounder with the bases loaded before LP Langevin (5-1) forced a fly ball to center to end the threat.

Torres, who went 2-for-4, opened the eighth with a hard single past shortstop Cade Parker before Bryan Broussard, Jr., uncorked his first home run in a Louisiana uniform with a two-run blast to right.

Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Robichaux, who recorded his first hit of the season and gave the Ragin' Cajuns a 17-3 advantage. Two batters later, Wargo drilled his second home run of the season, sending a towering blast over the Batter's Eye in center field.

Langevin struck out eight and earned the win after relieving starter Blake Marshall in the second. Marshall, making his fourth career start in place of usual Friday night starter Andrew Herrmann, allowed one hit and one run with a strikeout in 1.2 innings.

Johnson surrendered eight runs – two of them earned – with four strikeouts and five hits allowed in 4.2 innings of work for the Eagles. White led Georgia Southern at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run scored while Blancato was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
