Midweek series moves to #TheTigue on Wednesday

HAMMOND – JT Etheridge struck out a career-high eight batters in his second career start and No. 14-ranked Louisiana scored 12 runs in the first three innings to defeat in-state opponent Southeastern Louisiana, 15-8, on Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

John Taylor, Trey LaFleur and Connor Cuff each homered as Louisiana (29-9) equaled its most runs scored in Hammond since a 15-8 win in 1947. SLU, which dropped its eighth straight game, fell to 19-18 on the season.

The midweek series moves to Lafayette on Wednesday when the teams will face off in a 6 p.m. first pitch at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans in the Lafayette area able to listen on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

Etheridge (2-2) pitched a career-best 4.0 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns allowing a pair of hits and a run. Conor Higgs had three doubles – the first by a Ragin' Cajun since CJ Willis against Louisiana Tech in 2021 – while Kyle DeBarge went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Taylor scored on Duncan Pastore's RBI grounder before erupting for seven runs in the second.

Higgs led off the inning with a double off SLU starter Will Kinzeler (1-4) and scored two batters later on Jackson Halter's RBI single to right. After Clay Wargo was hit by a pitch, Taylor hit a three-run blast to right for a 5-0 lead.

DeBarge greeted reliever Hayden Robb with a double inside the third-base line before LaFleur and Higgs would double to push Louisiana's lead to 8-0.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored four runs with two outs in the third as DeBarge hit an RBI single up the middle before LaFleur belted the next pitch to right field for a 12-1 lead.

Higgs added his third double of the game in the sixth to drive in LaFleur before Josh Alexander followed with an RBI single through the right side.

Cuff capped off the scoring for Louisiana in the eighth when he hit an opposite-field home run – the first of his collegiate career.

SLU scored a run in the second inning on Jake Killingsworth's leadoff homer before Cole Stromboe scored an unearned run in the fifth. The Lions fought back with six runs in the seventh inning, capped by TJ Salvaggio's grand slam.

Kinzeler earned the loss for SLU after allowing six runs on six hits in 1.1 innings.
