Fast start and defense that turned in four double plays guides No. 25 Louisiana past App State
BOONE, N.C. – The No. 25-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team received timely hitting and continued to roll double plays on defense in capturing a 6-2 win over App State in game two of the Sun Belt Conference series on Saturday, March 29 at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium in Boone, North Carolina.
With the win Louisiana (23-13, 8-0 SBC) locked up the series victory over App State (15-15, 3-5 SBC). It marks the Ragin' Cajuns 84th consecutive Sun Belt Conference series won, a streak which dates back to March 2013.
The Ragin' Cajuns got a quick start on the way to winning for the 14th time in the past 15 games, with Alexa Langeliers delivering an RBI triple followed by Brooke Ellestad's RBI single – both hits coming with two outs – for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Ellestad homered in her next at bat, her third long ball of the series, and UL was ahead 3-0 halfway through the second time through the order against App State's Delani Buckner.
The early edge was backed up by the pitching of Chloe Riassetto (5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R) and the defense which collected three of the four ground ball double plays turned in the first four innings.
After the Mountaineers rallied in the fifth the slice the Cajuns lead to 3-2, Laney Credeur launched a leadoff home run in the sixth to reinforce the hold on the lead. In the bottom half of the frame it was Sam Landry inducing a double play ball back to the circle to prevent any type of Mountaineers response.
Langeliers picked up her second RBI of the contest to provide an insurance run in the seventh and an extra run was tacked on when Sam Roe scored on an errant pickoff throw.
Ellestad, Langeliers and Mihya Davis each went 2-for-4 at the plate, combining for six of Louisiana's 10 base hits. In addition to picking up her third home run of the series, Ellestad posted two more RBI increasing her series total to seven RBI.
Riassetto scattered the seven hits the Mountaineers recorded across the 5-1/3 innings she worked and set the tone by starting off with four scoreless innings pitched. Landry retired all four batters she faced in collecting the save.
The four double plays the Cajuns defense recorded marked a season-high total, increased the series total to seven and brought the season total up to 29. UL finished one double play shy of the NCAA record of five first recorded by Alabama in 2009.
UL claimed the series victory for the seventh time in as many meetings with App State. The Ragin' Cajuns increased their all-time series lead to 17-2 which includes a 9-1 mark in Boone.
With Friday's result, Louisiana continues its best start in Sun Belt Conference play since the 2019 team went undefeated (25-0).
