Cajuns lock up sweep after rallying with one out left in seventh inning at bat of series finale
MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team recorded a Sun Belt Conference series sweep over South Alabama on Saturday, March 16 at Jaguar Field in Mobile, Alabama by closing out the halted series opener and taking both ends of the doubleheader that followed.
Louisiana (18-12, 3-0 SBC) extended its season winning streak to nine games and captured its 82nd consecutive Sun Belt series victory dating back to March 2013.
The Cajuns fended off a bottom of the seventh rally from South Alabama (14-11-1, 0-3 SBC) in the resumption of game one of the series that was suspended on Friday evening to win 3-2. The Jaguars loaded the bases with no outs, but Chloe Riassetto induced a pair of sacrifice fly outs and a ground ball out to preserve UL's lead.
Louisiana entered Saturday's play with a 3-0 lead on the strength of Sam Roe's two-run home run and Brooke Ellestad's RBI single in the third inning and six shutout innings pitched by Sam Landry during play in the series opener on Friday.
UL jumped on the board in its first at bat in the opening game of the doubleheader and never relinquished the lead in clinching the series victory with a 6-2 triumph. Mihyia Davis and Maddie Hayden singled to lead off and later scored on two-out RBI singles from Alexa Langeliers and Ellestad for a 2-0 lead.
The teams traded runs in the third and it remained 3-1 in the Cajuns' favor until a two-run single from Sam Roe in the sixth widened the gap.
Landry and Riassetto each limited the Jags to a single run and three hits, both working three-plus innings. The duo combined to coax 15 ground ball outs from the USA lineup.
In the series finale the Jags broke a scoreless tie with a two-run third inning and starting pitcher Olivia Lackie was one out shy of tossing a shutout. The Cajuns got new life when Jourdyn Campbell delivered one of her renowned pinch-hit home runs, the two-run launch to right center evening the score at 2-all.
Landry, who took over in the fourth and kept USA scoreless, stranded a Jaguars runner who had reached third base with one out in the bottom of the seventh to set up extra innings.
Louisiana took the momentum and ran immediately in extra innings, sending 17 batters to the plate and pushing across 13 runs in the top of the eighth run away with the 15-3 win.
The Cajuns wound up with 18 base hits off of USA pitching – 11 hits totaled against starting pitcher Olivia Lackie – with Davis (3-for-5, RBI) and Laney Credeur (3-for-4, RBI) leading a group of five players with multiple-hit efforts.
The final relief pitching line for Landry's four shutout innings included five strikeouts and just two hits allowed to the 18 batters she faced while holding the Jags in check until Campbell's heroics arrived.
With the series sweep Louisiana stretched its winning streak over South Alabama to 26 games dating back to the 2016 season and increased its all-time series lead to 48-11.
